I FOREWORD
From the communicated line data, this study is aimed at determining the appropriate damping system
which allows to withstand Aeolian vibrations by using the computation of the micro-deformation of the
cable wires. It is then possible to determine the number and the position of each Stockbridge damper
if necessary.
In this report, the bending strains in the wires are given by the line parameters for each frequency. In
the appendixes, the charts show the summaries of these data and the results of the damping
calculations.
All the computations were done by using the software TECNOSOFT, V.2.0.5 (2004) developed by Mr
Rodolfo CLAREN, TECNODIN s.r.l. (Milano, ITALY).).

This study was carried out by considering and using the highest tension value at the EDS
temperature, equivalent to a tensile load of 20.64 kN (20% of the cable RTS) for each span.
NOTA: The tension load used for the calculation is given by the customer.

The results are presented in Appendix 1 on the graphs, which show the maximum dynamic bending
strain, in µmm/mm, at suspension clamp (or dead-end clamp) extremity vs. the frequency.
The range of vibration frequencies are related to the wind speed through the Strouhal relation:

• D = Overall diameter of the cable, in mm
According to our experience, the range of vibration frequencies is calculated for wind velocities
between 1 and 7 m/s, and remains lower than 100 Hz
Different parameters have to be considered for the calculation. The principals are the following:
About the last criterion, the wind is a fundamental factor which induces Aeolian vibration and remains
quite difficult to simulate. In this way, DERVAUX SA follows the CIGRE recommendations and uses a
TECNOSOFT model in order to represent a wind as realistic as possible.
For this study, a laminar wind has been used with a coefficient of turbulence of 7%. This coefficient is
representative of the type of ground.
Finally, the calculations have been carried out with a safety coefficient of 1.5 (excepted for the
special cases)
These graphs show that the strains of the cable for the different configurations are over the limit of
150 microstrains 0-peak which is the fatigue limit for this type of cable (specified in the technical
specification)
Therefore, calculation shall be carried out by taking into account the damping effect of the
stockbridge damper on the line.

For this application, the Stockbridge dampers considered are:

In order to guarantee an optimum damping of the system, the following conditions have to be
respected:
• The maximum dynamic bending deformation of the cable at the suspension clamp (or
compression dead end) extremity remains lower than the limit value of 150 µstrains 0-
peak.
• The maximum dynamic bending deformation of the cable at the damper clamp remains
lower than the limit value of 75 µstrains 0-peak
• The maximum bending amplitude at the Stockbridge damper clamp must be lower than
the fatigue limits of this damper and specified in Paragraph III.
Then, calculations are made for a given span length (and tensile load) with Stockbridge damper(s)
thus located / positioned and using its response curves.
The results of these calculations with damper(s) are displayed on the graphs in Appendix 2. For a
given span length and tensile load, each graph displays as a function of the frequency:
• The dynamic bending deformation of the cable at the suspension clamp (or compression
dead end) extremity - Black curve
• The dynamic bending deformation of the cable at the damper clamp - Green curve
• The maximum damper amplitude at the Stockbridge damper clamp - Red curve
This graph illustrates the maximum span length which will be protected by the damper. Then these
results can be implemented for an inferior span length.
In particular, the graphs in Appendix 2, shows that the maximum dynamic bending strain at
suspension clamp (or dead-end clamp) extremity does not exceed the limit of 150 µstrains 0- peak.
Indeed, the comparison between the graphs with dampers (Appendix 2) and without damper
(Appendix 1) demonstrates the efficiency of such damper’s positioning.
For this study, the number and the location of the Stockbridge damper are displayed in the
positioning plan in Appendix 3.

V CONCLUSION
This study and the results calculated are usable and valid for the Stockbridge dampers from
DERVAUX SA and for the line data provided. This calculation must be revised if a modification of the
line data is done.
The optimum location / position determined / calculated of the Stockbridge damper(s) from the
extremity of either suspension clamp or dead-end clamp at the defined tensile load is the following:
