back into the vial.
c. Withdraws additional medication if necessary to
obtain the correct dose.
11. When the dose is correct, withdraws needle or vial
access device from vial at a 90° angle.
12. Holds syringe upright at eye level when checking and
rechecking medication dose.
13. If using a filter needle, draws 0.2 mL of air into the
syringe, measures medication, and ejects air., as directed in
Procedure Checklist 23-7.
14. Recaps needle or injection cannula using needle
recapping device or an approved one-handed method.
15. If administering an irritating medication or if a vial
access device or filter needle was used to draw up
medication, changes the needle prior to administration.
16. If needle must be changed, follows these steps:
a. Holds syringe vertically and draws 0.2 mL of air
into the syringe. Holds at eye level and re-checks
measured dose.
b. Removes filter (or other) needle and reattaches the
“saved” (or other sterile) needle for administration
c. Measures exact medication dose. Holds syringe
vertically to expel all the air.
d. If necessary to eject medication after ejecting air,
tips the syringe horizontal to do so.
17. Disposes of vial and filter needle(s) in a sharps
container.
