1. CBAHI at A Glance
The Saudi Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI) is the official agency
authorized to grant accreditation certificates to all governmental and private healthcare facilities
operating today in Saudi Arabia. CBAHI has emerged from the Saudi Health Council as a non-
profit organization. The principal function of CBAHI is to set the healthcare quality and patient
safety standards against which all healthcare facilities are evaluated for evidence of compliance.
1.1 Foundation
The foundation of CBAHI dates back to 2001 as Makkah Region Quality Program (MRQP), an
initiative aimed at improving quality of healthcare delivery in the Makkah Region. In 2005, under
a Ministerial Order, MRQP was developed and named as Central Board for Accreditation of
Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI) and its jurisdiction was expanded to the whole country.
1.2 National Standards
In 2006, with the help of healthcare quality experts from the public and private sectors, CBAHI
developed the first set of national standards for hospitals.
1.3 ISQua accreditation
In 2012, CBAHI’s 2nd edition of national standards for hospitals was certified by the International
Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua).
1.4 Mandatory status of CBAHI accreditation
In late 2013, when a Cabinet of Ministers Decree called for changing CBAHI’s official name to the
“Saudi Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions”, it also mandated the national
accreditation by CBAHI on all healthcare facilities. In addition, the Ministry of Health is mandating
CBAHI accreditation as a prerequisite for renewal of the operating license – a step towards
encouraging more participation in this ambitious national initiative.
It is mandatory for all public and private healthcare delivery facilities (hospitals, polyclinics, blood
banks and medical laboratories) in Saudi Arabia to comply with national standards set by CBAHI
and obtain its accreditation through a survey process set forth by the Center.

2. Accreditation Criteria
Healthcare accreditation is an assessment process that involves a rigorous, transparent, and
comprehensive evaluation by an external independent accreditation body.
The healthcare facility undergoes an examination of its systems, processes, and performance by
peer reviewers or surveyors to ensure that all is conducted in a manner that meets applicable
predetermined and published national standards. Before the external evaluation, i.e., the survey
visit, the healthcare facility is expected to conduct a comprehensive self-assessment to decide
on the level of its preparedness and how far or how close it is from achieving full compliance with
the standards. Accreditation, therefore, represents a public recognition by the healthcare
accreditation body of satisfactory achievement of accreditation standards by a healthcare facility.

2.1 BENEFITS OF ACCREDITATION:
 Provides a framework for the organizational structure and management.
 Helps improve patient safety and minimize the risk of near misses, adverse outcomes, and
medical errors.
 Enhances community confidence in the quality and safety of care provided.
 Surveyed healthcare facilities have found that seeing their own operation through the
eyes of experienced surveyors provided them with a useful, more objective assessment
of their internal administrative and clinical processes and effective proposals for further
improving their processes and services to the community.
 Proves (on the long run) to increase the efficiency and enhance the lean practices, which
translates into decreasing waste and more optimal results with less consumption of
resources.
 Helps to improve the competitiveness of a healthcare facility.
 Will satisfy the regulations of the Ministry of Health, being the legislative health authority,
which is now considering linking the national accreditation by CBAHI with the licensing of
the private healthcare facilities. Registration with CBAHI and enrollment in its national
accreditation program is accepted by the Ministry of Health – at this stage- as satisfactory
evidence for the purpose of license renewal. Eventually however, all healthcare facilities
operating in Saudi Arabia are required to achieve accreditation by CBAHI.
 Better reimbursement by increasing confidence of patients, insurers and other (third)
parties.
 Provides a robust tool for continuous quality improvement efforts in the healthcare
facilities.
 Provides for a great learning and educational opportunity.

Due to increasing need, CBAHI always seeks to enroll new surveyors and for that purpose, invites
applications from health care professionals with expertise in Leadership and Quality
Management, Medical, Nursing, as well as specialized fields such as, Medication Management,
Infection Control, Laboratory and Facility Management and Safety with good command of English
language both spoken and written and good computer and communication skills.

2.2 WHO IS THE SURVEYOR?

 A peer reviewer who assesses the performance of health care facilities against national
hospital standards of excellence.
 A dedicated professional who devotes time and expertise to the accreditation process.

2.3 SURVEYOR’S ROLE AND ATTRIBUTES:
As a surveyor, you will be called upon to
 Assess the healthcare facility’s performance against the national standards of quality and
patient safety by conducting on-site surveys.
 Deliver educational sessions if required
 To become a certified CBAHI surveyor attend Surveyor Learning Program (SLP) provided
by CBAHI.
In addition to qualifications, experience and training, several personality attributes are required
for a successful candidates who will be the future surveyor. These include, but not limited to, the
following:

To be constantly and actively aware of physical surroundings and activities.

Ability to communicate effectively.

2.4 QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 Hold at least Bachelor degree in the specialty required (Higher qualification preferred)
 Practical experience of minimum 3 years in the relevant specialty.
 Experience in quality and accreditation is preferred.
 Knowledge about the Saudi Arabian health system.
 Currently resident in Saudi Arabia with no plans to leave within 3 years.
