Mettur Thermal Power Station-I is located in Salem District, Tamil Nadu. It was the first inland thermal power station of TANGEDCO. The station has 4 units with a total capacity of 840 MW. Units I and II were commissioned in 1987-1988, while Units III and IV were commissioned in 1989-1990. All units are coal-fired and receive coal from mines in Orissa and West Bengal. In 2016-17, the station generated 5730.765 MU with a plant load factor of 77.88%. The station has set records for continuous running and has received several awards for its performance and utilization of fly ash.

Mettur Thermal Power Station - I is situated in Salem District.
This is the first inland thermal Power Station of TANGEDCO. The first stage consists of units I & II of 210 M.W at a cost of Rs.384.30 crores. The second stage consists of units III &IV of 210 M.W each at a cost of Rs.351.76 crores. All the four units are coal based. Coal for MTPS is received from Mahanadhi coal fields Limited (Talchar & IB Valley), Orissa, Eastern coal fields Limited, Ranikanj, West Bengal. Generation & PLF for the year 2016-17 is 5730.765 MU, PLF 77.88 % Record of continuous running

MTPS-I hadreceived II prize for Fly Ash Utilization from Ministry of Power, Ministry of Environment and Dept. of Science & Technology/GOI/ND during 2005. Commendation Certificate received from Ministry of Power/GOI/ND for the year 2015 towards appreciation for Energy Conservation. Appreciation award received from National Safety Council, Govt. of TN for the year 2014 for promoting Safety, Health & Environment. MTPS-I is in No1position in TANGEDCO for the PLF achievement for the four consecutive years (2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 & 2016-17) MTPS-I is the only station in TANGEDCO to cross the Annual PLF of 90 % six times. New Land marks Achieved Sp. Oil consumption during March 2017 is NIL for Station 660 No. coal Wagons were tipped on 27.04.2015 with out demurrage
