Tuition Fee Regulations
2010/11
Tuition Fee Regulations
1 Student status assessment
1.1 When you enrol on a course at LSBU, the University will assess whether you are a Home, EU or Overseas student. The reason we do
this is to determine the level of fees payable (if appropriate) and for our regulatory returns. We will require you to complete a Student
Status Assessment form and provide evidence to support the answers you give. If you hold a student visa you will not be eligible to
join a part-time course.
1.2 Your student status assessment normally remains unchanged for the duration of your course of study. However, there are some
circumstances when your status may change after the start of your course. If your circumstances change, you will be required to
provide proof and to complete a further Student Status Assessment form, before a decision can be made. Any new rate of fee payable
will be charged from the next academic year.
2 Equivalent or Lower Qualifications (ELQ)
2.1 The government no longer funds Home/EU students who study for a second degree at the same or lower level than a qualification
they already hold. Students in this position will be charged a higher fee by the University. For more information see the ELQ section
of the LSBU website: http://www.lsbu.ac.uk/fees/additionalHelp.html#withDegree
3 Payment arrangements for different types of students
3.1 There are different payment arrangements for different types of students.
• Full-time Home or EU undergraduates (see green section)
• Part-time Home or EU undergraduates (see red, dark green, dark purple or blue sections)
• Full and part-time Overseas undergraduates (see dark green, dark purple or blue sections)
• Full and part-time Home or EU or Overseas postgraduates (see dark green, dark purple or blue sections)
• Full and part-time Home or EU ELQ undergraduates or postgraduates (see dark green, dark purple or blue sections)
4 Full-time undergraduate Home and EU students
4.1 If you are a Home or EU student, applications for maintenance, tuition fee loans and other support should be made online to Student
Finance England (see contacts section). If you are an EU student you need to complete a paper application (see contacts section).
4.2 Payment will be made by the Student Loans Company. The support you are entitled to will differ depending on whether you
are eligible for the New or Old package of Student Support.
www.lsbu.ac.uk/fees/underGrad.html
You will be sent a Payment Advice from the SLC setting out your entitlements.
4.3 New students You will be given the option to take out a loan for your tuition fees*. You must tell Student Finance England as part of
your application form how much Tuition Fee Loan you wish to borrow. Any amount you do not borrow is payable at your published
enrolment session.
4.4 Continuing students Students who started in 2006/07, 2007/08, 2008/09 or 2009/10 (eligible for the new package of
Student Support): You will be given the option to take out a loan for your tuition fees*. You must tell Student Finance England
as part of your application form how much Tuition Fee Loan you wish to borrow. Any amount you do not borrow is payable at your
published re-enrolment dates.
www.lsbu.ac.uk/fees/underGrad.html
4.5 Students who started before 2006/7 (and those eligible for the Old package of Student Support): Means-testing will be carried out
based on your income or that of your family, to determine how much help towards the tuition fee you are entitled to receive. This
is known as the Tuition Fee Grant. You will be given the option to take out a loan for your tuition fees.*
You must tell Student Finance England as part of your application form how much Tuition Fee Loan you wish to borrow. Any amount
that you do not borrow (or is not covered by your Tuition Fee Grant), is payable by the published re-enrolment dates.
www.lsbu.ac.uk/fees/underGrad.html
4.6 The exam board decision for some students may allow you to pass to the next level with outstanding units at the previous level.
Please note; that in this case, Student Finance England will only consider your next level studies for funding. Fees for any repeated
units (from the previous level) will need to be paid directly to the University in full by the published re-enrolment dates.
4.7 The exam board decision for some students will be ‘continue outstanding units’ or ‘repeat failed units with attendance’. In both cases
this means that you must repeat all failed units and are ineligible to take any additional units.
4.8 Payment arrangements New Students
As part of your enrolment you will need to supply the University with your Payment Advice, which sets out the following:
1. Your Course Fee
2. Your Tuition Fee Loan amount
3. The amount you pay to your University
* Please note: Tuition fee support does not cover field trip costs.
Tuition Fee Regulations
4.9 Continuing Students You will need to have your Payment Advice available when you re-enrol online. It will set out the following:
1. Your Course Fee
2. Your Tuition Fee Loan amount
3. The amount of Tuition Fee Grant you have been awarded
4. The amount you pay to your University
4.10 You will be asked to make payment of any amount shown on your Payment Advice that you owe to the university, plus any other
fees that your course may attract (i.e Compulsory field trip fees) at your enrolment session or by the deadlines for re-enrolment.
Tuition fee support does not cover field trip costs.
4.11 Some new students may not have received their Payment Advice at the time of enrolment.
4.12 If this applies to you the University will ask you to confirm how much tuition fee loan you have applied for (or intend to apply for).
Any amount you do not borrow will be payable at enrolment. You will remain personally responsible for payment of fees and charges,
even if there is an arrangement for the University to receive payment on your behalf from the Student Loans Company.
5 Part-time undergraduate – Home and EU students
5.1 You may be eligible for an income assessed, non-repayable Part-time Fee Grant and Course Grant to help with the costs of your
tuition fees and other course costs, such as books and traveling expenses. The amount you are awarded will depend on both your
household income and the intensity of your course. Even if you are granted the maximum level of Part-time Fee Grant it will not cover
the total cost of your yearly tuition fees. For more details see www.lsbu.ac.uk/fees/underGradPartTime.html#help
5.2 At enrolment or re-enrolment you will need to pay at least the first instalment of 50% of your tuition fees in order to be enrolled.
5.3 It is your responsibility to contact Student Finance England to make sure your application is processed and you receive a letter
confirming your Fee Grant entitlement.
5.4 The final date by which you are required to pay your fees in full is 31st January 2011
5.5 Students not eligible for the Part-time Fee Grant can pay as Self funded, Sponsored or Part Self/Sponsored students.

17 Sponsored students
7.1 If you are sponsored by your employer or another organisation, it is essential that you provide a new letter on enrolment/re-enrolment
each year of your course. The letter should confirm the address to which we can send our invoice with a contact name and the
amount of the sponsorship. You will remain personally responsible for payment of fees and charges, even if there is an arrangement
for the University to receive payment on your behalf from a sponsor or any other third party.
7.2 NHS London Strategic Health Authority Contract Students Some students have their tuition fees paid via a contract that LSBU
has with the NHS London Strategic Health Authority (SHA). When you enrol or re-enrol you need to confirm which Primary Care Trust,
NHS Trust (Acute Hospital), Foundation Trust, Mental Health Trust or Ambulance Trust you work for, or will be spending your clinical
placement with, as part of the LSBU/NHS London Contract.
The University will validate the information you provide against the contract. You will remain personally responsible for payment of
fees and charges, even if there is an arrangement for the University to receive payment on your behalf from a Strategic Health Authority.
18 Part self-funding/part-sponsored students
8.1 If your sponsor is only paying part of your fees your contributions are payable in the same way as those of Self funding students.
Please also remember to provide your sponsor’s letter (see above). You will remain personally responsible for payment of fees and
charges, even if there is an arrangement for the University to receive payment on your behalf from a sponsor or any other third party.
19 Faculty of Health CPD_OPEN students
If you are self funded full payment is required prior to starting the unit.
10 Other fees
10.1 Field trips/residentials Some courses include compulsory field trips/residentials, the cost of which is added to your total tuition fee.
Please note: these extra costs cannot be covered by the Student Loans Company, either by tuition fee grant or loan. You are required
to pay these costs yourself at enrolment or re-enrolment.
10.2 In addition some optional units include field trips or residentials for which you will be asked to pay separately. You will not be allowed
to attend until payment has been made in full. Failure to attend will result in unit failure.
10.3 Additional activities and registration fees Your course may require you to attend other teaching sessions outside the University
for which you may be required to pay an additional fee. Some courses, e.g. HNDs, require registration with an external body for which
a fee is also payable.
10.4 Postgraduate dissertation extension: From 2010/11 extensions to dissertation submission will not be available. If you do not
submit by the standard dissertation deadline you must notify the University of non-submission. The dissertation non-submission form
is available at http://www1.lsbu.ac.uk/current.student/formsPublications.shtml.
For the academic implications of non submission see the Academic Regulations 2010/11.
10.5 Repeat study If you are required to repeat any part of your course, your fees are payable at the unit rate applicable, irrespective of
whether you are required to attend or only take part of a unit (e.g. if you only have to re-take exams or submit course work). Full-time
Home and EU undergraduate students who receive the exam board decision to repeat failed units with attendance can apply for
discretionary repeat funding from Student Finance England. You should collect and complete a Repeat Study form from the Fees and
Bursary Office (Finance Department) in the Technopark Building.
