Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Lesson Title:
Cover it!
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
construct nets and understand formulas used to measure surface area of different shapes.
identify the different formulas needed to calculate different shapes.
State Standards:
6.GM.4: Unfold three-dimensional figures into two-dimensional rectangles and triangles
(nets) to find the surface area and to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
Context:
This particular lesson will further explore surface area for the students. From a previous
class period, students would have learned formulas and different examples for surface area. Each
student will know the various forms that correlate with surface area. In this lesson, the instructor
will be furthering the knowledge of the students. After this lesson, students will have a lesson on
volume to compare the differences of surface area to volume.
Data:
The students will be grouped with their assigned groups. Every week the instructor will
change the assigned groups to mix up the students. The students will have already known of their
assigned groups for the day. Students will have about five in each group. Students will be
learning different ways and each student will contribute to their small groups.

Procedures:
Introduction (10 Minutes):
The class will be started off with the instructor telling the students their assigned groups
for the class period. The students will be organized into their color groups that were previously
assigned to them. The instructor will let the students organize into their groups quickly. As the
students are arranging themselves into their groups, the instructor will pull up the PowerPoint
made to show the students each station and explain what they must be doing. The instructor will
explain each station to the students. The instructor must hand out the fill-in the notes packet and
the Cover it! Worksheet to be utilized at the given stations. The instructor will give time for the
students to ask questions and then the groups will proceed to each station.
Teacher Directed (15 Minutes):
In this station, the students will utilize the fill-in the notes packet given during the
instruction portion of the class. The fill-in notes will have a variety of problems and notes to be
directed by the instructor. The students will follow along with the Power Point, previously made
by the teacher. Each slide from the PowerPoint will correlate to the fill-in notes and the students
must write down the words/phrases/numbers that apply to the blank on their papers. The notes
will be a variation of the class lesson from the previous day. This small group notes will further
explain the formulas needed to understand surface area. The students will have opportunities to
ask any questions as the instructor is going through the notes and the instructor will answer any
questions presented.
Collaborative (15 Minutes):
In this section of the class, the students will have specific instructions on the table they
are working at. The Cover it! Worksheet, given in the beginning of the class, will have many
problems that the students must solve. There will be different worksheets on the desk that have
different figures of nets. The students will be in charge of assigning each figure to a student to
cut out. The students will collectively assemble each figure with tape. On the Cover it!
Worksheet the students must draw the new assembled figure and then figure out the surface area
of each figure. Each figure will have different dimensions on them, and the students must use the
formulas they previously learned to calculate the surface area. At the end of the class period, the
students will be required to hand in the worksheet.
Independent Digital (10 Minutes):
During this station, the students will be working independently on their Chrome Books.
The students will have the Surface Area Worksheet, given at the beginning of the class. The
worksheet will have clear instructions for the students. The students will go to the website and
follow the instructions given on their worksheet. On the website there will be multiple tabs that
the students must click on. Under each tab on the website, the students will manipulate figures to
the dimensions given and calculate the surface area. Since this station is shorter than the others,
the students will work as long as they can and will not be required to finish the whole worksheet
but will be required to turn in what they could accomplished.
Closure (15 Minutes):
This portion of the class will be dedicated to gathering all the students together and their
materials accomplished during the class. After making sure all the papers are collected and the
students are in their assigned seats the instructor will put on a video linked in the PowerPoint
from the beginning of the class. After collecting all materials and watching the video, the
instructor will ask the students to get out a piece of paper to write on and turn in. This will act as
an “Exit ticket” for the instructor. The students must write down a concept that they have learned
throughout the class period.
Rationale:
PowerPoint Lesson
This lesson tool provides the student with a visual way of understanding surface area.
The instructor can create a slideshow to further the student’s knowledge about surface area. The
slide show will include pictures and visuals of each station and an explanation of each station.
Every teacher will know how to use PowerPoint and it is a common tool used in the classroom.
This will be seen visually and verbally to aid other learners.
Braining Camp
The Braining Camp website will help the students understand surface area. It will provide
an explanation of surface area. The website will have the students answer different questions to
build on their knowledge. There are different tabs that the students must click on. One tab will
give a mini lesson about surface area that will help the students better understand the surface area
of different figures, by showing them the nets of different figures. Another tab will allow the
students to manipulate the dimensions of the shape to show different surface areas. Two other
tabs are filled with problems and questions, that the students will answer. This website will
instruct visual and kinesthetic learners.
