Non-hibakusha employers developed a prejudice against the survivors as word got around that
they were prone to all sorts of ailments, and that even those, like Nakamura-san, who were not
cruelly maimed and had not developed any serious overt symptoms were unreliable workers,
since most of them seemed to suffer, as she did, from the mysterious but real malaise that came
to be known as one kind of lasting A-bomb sickness: a nagging weakness and weariness, a
dizziness now and then, digestive troubles, all aggravated by a feeling of oppression, a sense of
doom, for it was said that unspeakable diseases might at any time plant nasty flowers in the
bodies of their victims, and even in those of their descendants.

-John, Hersey, Hiroshima

Having a positive attitude is something that you must strive for and aim to get better at, like
those who have laid the groundwork before us, such as presidents or ancestors, they have been
through many trials and hardships, since many of them did not have the technology or counselors
or self-help books as we have now, they had to work to have an attitude of greatness and
positivity, now you really want to know how to obtain that positive attitude, well here are the
skills that you will need to get you there: a happiness around you at all times, the ability to want
to always do and be better, and the skills needed to get there, if you use these skills you will
become more positive in your life.

Phrases and Clauses

On the front porch steps=phrase

After the dinner party=phrase
We ate peas and carrots=clause
After running to the store=phrase
While I nodded=clause

Geopolitical conflicts between nations will always be with us.

This doesn’t mean we need to be afraid of each other.

Because of geopolitical conflicts between nations always being with us, this doesn’t mean we
need to be afraid of each other.
Now that geopolitical conflicts between nations will always be with us, this doesn’t mean we
need to be afraid of each other.
As long as this doesn’t mean we need to be afraid of each other, geopolitical conflicts between
nations will always be with us.
Although geopolitical conflicts between nations will always be with us, this doesn’t mean we
need to be afraid of each other.

I combined these sentences using subordinating conjunctions. The meaning changes and the
importance of the sentence changes when you add subordinating conjunctions. Some sentences
can be changed and have a whole different interpretation by just adding in that conjunction.

Manipulating Parts
Opener: modifier, main idea.
Closer: main idea, modifier.
Interrupter: main, modifier, idea.
Multiples: modifier, main idea, modifier.
main, modifier, idea, modifier.
Opener: Putting his own preferences above everything else, Snowden self-indulgently
short-circuited the democratic structures of accountability.
Closer: Snowden self-indulgently short-circuited the democratic structures of accountability,
putting his own preferences above everything else.
Interrupter: Snowden, putting his own preferences above everything else, self-indulgently
short-circuited the democratic structures of accountability.
Opener: Snowden self-indulgently short-circuited the democratic structures of accountability, he
was putting his own preferences above everything else.

I like the opener the best because it creates an idea and a picture for the reader when using the
modifier first before the main idea. It shows how Snowden was putting his own preferences
before everything else and then it goes into the details about how he did so.

As the weeks passed, Maurice slowly grew more grayer and wrinkled. He began to lose the
bounce in his step and along with that came no more makeup wearing and his impeccable clothes
had spots on them. One day I decided to come in earlier than I normally do, I saw him running
frantically from table to table in the dining room. While he was rubbing his finger across the
middle of a jagged crack, he shouted at me “look at this plate”. He watched it shatter into tiny
pieces into the carpet as he hurled it at the wall. He went to table to table, looking at all the
plates, hurling one after the other against the wall. He hurled another plate to the wall watching
the pieces shatter into the carpet.

“Slang Rebels”

Rhetorical Situation
The writer conveys the problem very well throughout the essay. He explains how slang words
have been used and the misunderstanding of how they used. The writer certainly knows their
background and has done research. He uses his tools and references well known professors. They
have pulled in information and facts from many sources to get their purpose across. The audience
would be for anyone wanting to know more about slang words or college students, and even high
school students who use slang words the most. The purpose was to explain how slang words
have been used in our language improperly but have still made it into our English language. We
are consumers of language, either formal or informal.

Academic/ Technical Writing

The writer creates a very clear and concise message that everyone would understand. Everything
was organized very well and his paragraphs had a beginning thesis sentence. He has scientific
evidence which goes back to logos. He creates ethos with his credibility and those of the
professors. Pathos is shown with the topic itself and how people choose to talk.

Research Skills
He has a page and a half of sources which he cites properly. He uses many sources and has many
facts. His in-text citations are correctly cited and he makes sure that everything he says that isn’t
his is cited.

affirmative case in regard to their character of general education, and fitness for graduate work in

candidate’s abilities and to estimate their promises will be given very serious consideration. The
results of the Graduate Record examination are used as a supplementary objective to check on
the candidate’s aptitudes and knowledge. When we consider an applicant, regard will be given to
character and promise as well as scholastic attainment. A personal interview is not required.
