Dear Carine and Billie,
Hey Mom and Carine, I know it’s been a long time since we’ve
talked but I just want to say how much I miss you guys and that
your presence is desideratum and you make me extremely elated .
I hope you don’t think it presumptuous for you guys to come see
me. I think that it would be nice to catch up on everything and get
away from this isolated atmosphere in Alaska. Although, please
don't bring Walt with you because he will receive a lambasting.
After how we left off, I don’t ever want to see him again.
I do hope that you get this letter for I am now beginning to
find beautiful flowers and bushes just like back at home. From
what I can see the only things keeping me sane is the thought of
you guys. I rueful inviting you earlier but I was too busy because I
am such a nomad. Im sorry for putting you guys through all this
trouble back home and for respecting my decision to leave but I
think this is the time for you guys to come see me. I am seriously
beginning to lose my mind.
Well, enough of my chattering! Hope to hear from you soon,
Mom and Carine. There is no surfeit for how much I miss you!
Love,
Chris

1) I selected “IDFC” by Blackbear
to describe Chris’s story along
the way of his trip, forgetting
about all the people he left
behind. One of the lyrics,
“Because I act like I don’t
f***ing care. Like they aint
even there” represents how
Chris still cares for his family
at times, but he thinks they
don’t care for him even
though they wanted him to
stay.
2) “Like a Hobo” by Charlie
Winston represents the
outlook on Chris’s travel. From
caring but nothing but a
backpack and some cents,
Chris travels around the
country with little to nothing
looking for the peoples help
until he can find solitude.
3) I chose “Dreamline” by Rush
because it correlated with
Chris’s trip while he was still
on the road.
4) “Wishlist” by Pearl Jam
connects with Chris on a level
of rather wanting than
needing. Chris’s obsession
with new things in nature
outlines what he really could want out of all. Key lyrics in the song include, “I wish I was a messenger
and all the news was good. I wish I was the full moon shining off of the Camaro’s hood.” This
describes how Chris uses his role to fulfill his dream into dreaming big. Alaska is his escape from the
life he wants to leave behind.
5) I selected “Prayer of the Refugee” by Rise Against to represent how Chris didn't feel right at home and
went out on his own with some rice and some water for his trip to Alaska. Key lyrics: “Before we
packed our bags and left all this behind us in the dust. We had a place that we could call home. And
a life that nobody could touch”. This song foreshadows how Chris’s mind is at and that soon it will to
bite him in the butt.
6) I selected “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” by Iron & Wine to represent Chris’s progress to becoming
a man overtime. He’s growing up and and realizing that he doesn't want to conform so he just leaves
everything behind and goes on a journey to Alaska in which he comes across unfamiliar tasks that
challenge him.
7) “No More Bad Days” by This Wild Life represents Chris McCandless trying to reinvent himself through
nature and exploring. Key lyrics include: “I hope for rain to to wash us clean and make a brand new start
for both our tired hearts”. This song represents how he is going to spend hiking around or taking
pictures of himself.

Subject: New ideas for Adventures!
Chris,
I hope everything is going well up in Alaska or wherever you are. Im just emailing you in regards to our last
conversation a couple weeks back. I am still very much interested in writing a story about your life, specifically a
book I’m thinking about. I cant believe that we share so many similarities.
Before I get into writing about your journey, I want to apologize for my aggressive behavior towards you for I
think what you are doing is stupid. It me took some time to fully understand, but I finally realized that you’re
just trying to find solitude. Sometimes it’s hard to control myself and my feelings get in the way and go
overboard. That might be a theme for the novel. What’s your idea?
Well, back to your story. I would really like to hear about the time you traveled to Alaska. I, also traveled to
Alaska. I was hiking the Devil’s Thumb when I met a storm of bad weather coming my way and forced me to go
back and hike another day. I then found a bus in the middle of the woods. I was really hoping to see you up here
because I feel like this would be a cool place to be in.
Anyways, maybe you could connect me to your friend Jim. Like him, I also am a woodsman and I would like to
know more about his experiences in the wild. I think that will be a good beginning to middle start of my book.
Thanks,
Krakauer

What’s up old man!
I’m flattered to be the subject of your next book. Unfortunately this is the last time I’m going to write to anybody
because where I am going there is no service whatsoever. I’m so happy that we have so much in common and I hope
to see you soon!
What a coincidence that you saw and stayed at the bus in the woods. I was hoping to go up in early August, but I might
have to make an exception into going up earlier as it is a wonderful sight to see. I am making my way up the coast
right now trying to save as much resources as I can. I understand your reason for your frustration as it was hard for me
to commit to what I want to do. I really want to go to a place where I can find peace with myself and be involved in
nature.
Yes, Jim Gallien is a union electrician and a great spirited guy that loves the wilderness. That’s all I really know about
him, although I usually mouth off about myself when I’m with Jim. His email is longrangejim@gmail.com. Feel free to
reach out to him with anything you might have, just mention that your a friend of mine and he will fill you in with
anything.

Let’s chat soon buddy! I look forward to working with you.
Best,
Jay
