ANALYSIS OF LANDING GEAR OF SPACESHUTTLE
Objective
Design and structural analysis of ‘Landing Gear’ of space shuttle, modifications an
improvement that can be done.
Introduction
The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable low Earth orbital system operated by the
U.S. NATIONAL AERONAUTICS and SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA), as
part of the Space shuttle Program, this vehicle could carry astronauts and payloads
into low Earth orbit, perform in-space operations, then re-enter the atmosphere and
land as a glider or aircraft, returning its crew and any on-board payload to the Earth.
The Space Shuttle orbiter had three sets of landing gear which emerged downwards
through doors in the heat shield. As a weight-saving measure, the gear could not be
retracted once deployed.
Landing gear is the undercarriage of an aircraft or spacecraft and is used for either
takeoff or landing. Landing gear is a most essential support of an aircraft or
spacecraft during landing and ground operations. It is attached with primary
structural members of a Space shuttle.
Generally, a landing gear has to bear heavy compressive load, drag load and side
load. Drag load and side load values are very small when compared to compressive
load. So, it is treated as one dimensional structure. During landing it is designed to
absorb the landing impact energy such that the loads transmitted to the air frames
are minimized. Apart from static strength, energy absorption is an important design
criterion.
Landing gears are generally “safe life” components and are replaced many times
during the service life of a spacecraft. Traditional metallic materials used in landing
gear structures are Aluminum, Titanium and steel alloys. Selection of material
depends on any considerations, which is in general be categorized as cost and
structural performance.
Methodology to be Followed
We will be creating the design of the landing gear firstly with the proper specified
dimensions in CATIA V5R20, then we will import our model design to another
software, that is ANSYS 15.0 where we will be performing structural analysis over
it. And then we will compare the analysis results by taking different materials.
Desired Outcome and Results
• We will analyze the structural performance of the Landing Gear, by getting
the results of our analysis.
• We will try to make it more feasible and we will also be being looking upon
the improvements that can be done on it.
• We will also try to analyze the material used in the construction of the actual
landing gear, and what changes can we do on it for a better performance.
