Grade 12 – BUSINESS ETHICS AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Quarter: FIRST
Theme: Understanding the fundamentals of various business organizations
Sub-Theme: Appreciate the contribution of the various business organization to
socio-economic development

I. LEARNING COMPETENCIES

1. Define Virtue ethics in their own words
2. Identify the classical philosophers who are major proponents of virtue ethics

III. LEARNING TASKS

Preliminary Activity:
The teacher will ask:
Code of ethics, code of conduct, core principle of fairness, accountability,
transparency and integrity, has become an integral part of business, do you ever
wonder how they all came to be?

Activity:

Group Activity:

A video clip will be shown to the class : You are who you’ve been looking for

The class will be divided into 5 groups.

Guide questions:
What was the man talking about?
How would you relate what he was talking about to yourself?
How would you relate it to business?
How would you summarize the essence of the video in one word?

Discuss your answer amongst your selves and share it to the class.

You have ten minutes to do this.

Analysis:
The groups will be asked the following questions:
1. How did you find the activity?
2. Did everyone in your group participate in the activity? How did group
participation affect in the achievement of your task?
3. How were you able to come up with your answers?
4. Were virtue and values the first consideration in your group discussion?

The groups can present their answer through any of the following means:

A. Discussion
B. Jingle
C. Poetry
D. Skit

Abstraction:
Teacher will say:
I. If I will ask you to define virtue, how would you define it? If we combined
virtue with ethics would it mean differently? How would it mean then?

Once the video is over, Teacher will say:


Based on the video clip, How would you define virtue ethics?
The video has mentioned about virtue ethics as a philosophy developed by certain
personalities, which name was mentioned in the video?

II. Game: Guess Who?


Picture of the “Big 3” Greek Philosophers will be shown to the class. Students
will be asked to identify them using the flashcards provided.
A. Socrates: “The unexamined life is not worth living.”
B. Plato: “Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly,
while bad people will find a way around the laws.”
C. Aristotle: "Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim
and end of human existence"

Application:
The teacher says
We shall now prepare for an activity by applying what we have learned.

If we are going to translate the following Philosophies into business practice to


which philosopher would you relate the following practices to?

1. Tony Hsieh, the CEO of American shoe company Zappos, is so committed to the
company's courses in happiness that he sold the company to Amazon on the
agreement it would be able to continue with its unique happy culture.

2. Every organisation should have a guiding vision, a sense of direction, a place to


aim for. To achieve this they need to examine themselves thoroughly. To be ruthless
and kind, harsh yet gentle, external and internal. To look through the cockpit
window and say to themselves – this is where I am heading, no matter what.

3. Laws are made to instruct the good, and in the hope that there may be no need
of them; also to control the bad, whose hardness of heart will not be hindered from
crime."

Assuming that you are a business person, what do you think will be the primary
purpose of your business?
