Reciprocating pump is a positive displacement pump where certain volume
of liquid is collected in enclosed volume and is discharged using pressure to the required
application. Reciprocating pumps are more suitable for low volumes of flow at high pressures.
A screw pump is a positive-displacement (PD) pump that use one or
several screws to move fluids or solids along the screw(s) axis. In its simplest form (the
Archimedes' screw pump), a single screw rotates in a cylindrical cavity, thereby moving the
material along the screw’s spindle.
A gear pump is a type of positive displacement (PD)pump. It moves a fluid
by repeatedly enclosing a fixed volume using interlocking cogs or gears, transferring it
mechanically using a cyclic pumping action. It delivers a smooth pulse-free flow proportional to
the rotational speed of its gears.
A piston pump is a type of positive displacement pump where the high-
pressure seal reciprocates with the piston. Piston pumps can be used to move liquids or
compress gases. They can operate over a wide range of pressures. High pressure operation
can be achieved without a strong effect on flow rate.
The Hydraulic Ram Pump, Hydram, or simply a Ram Pump is
a pump that uses the water hammer effect from built up water pressure. Using this pressure that
has been created by a water source above the pump, it can lift water to an elevation higher than
the pump.
A rotary vane pump is a positive-displacement pump that consists of vanes mounted to a rotor
that rotates inside a cavity. In some cases, these vanes can have variable length and/or be
tensioned to maintain contact with the walls as the pump rotates. It was invented by Charles C.
A centrifugal pump is a mechanical device designed to move a fluid by
means of the transfer of rotational energy from one or more driven rotors, called impellers. Fluid
enters the rapidly rotating impeller along its axis and is cast out by centrifugal force along its
circumference through the impeller’s vane tips.
A gear pump uses the meshing of gears to pump fluid by displacement.
They are one of the most common types of pumps for hydraulic fluid power applications. The
gear pump was invented around 1600 by Johannes Kepler. Gear pumps are also widely used in
chemical installations to pump high viscosity fluids
A piston pump is a type of positive displacement pump where the high-
pressure seal reciprocates with the piston. Piston pumps can be used to move liquids or
compress gases. They can operate over a wide range of pressures. High pressure operation
can be achieved without a strong effect on flow rate
An axial-flow pump, or AFP, is a common type of pump that essentially
consists of a propeller in a pipe. The propeller can be driven directly by a sealed motor in the
pipe or by electric motor or petrol/diesel engines mounted to the pipe from the outside or by a
right-angle drive shaft that pierces the pipe
A submersible pump is a device which has a hermetically sealed motor
close-coupled to the pump body. The whole assembly is submerged in the fluid to be pumped
A diaphragm pump is a positive displacement pump that uses a combination
of the reciprocating action of a rubber, thermoplastic or Teflon diaphragm and suitable valves on
either side of the diaphragm to pump a fluid
A plunger pump is a type of positive displacement pump where the high-
pressure seal is stationary and a smooth cylindrical plunger slides through the seal. This makes
them different from piston pumps and allows them to be used at higher pressures
A lobe pump, or rotary lobe pump, is a type of positive displacement pump. It
is like a gear pump except the lobes are designed to almost meet, rather than touch and turn
each other.
