13
2.6 Information about the safety packing:

Boxes are easy to pack, because the correct items to pack inside them are
larger and more durable than items that would go into a dish pack or a book box.
This makes packing them go much quicker.

Few Items where packing of goods undertake in carton box:

Pots, Pans, Trays, Shoes, Games, Toys, Folded clothing, Linens, Pillows,
Blankets, Small appliances, Stereo components, Speakers, Large land shades etc.;
are packed in medium sized boxes.
 A box or carton of cereal.

 Hard cigarette pack or paperboard box.

 Corrugated box used for storage of archives.

 Drink boxes.

 Milk in gable-top carton.

 Set-up box made of non-bending paperboard.

Advice:
 Always start packing every box by adding a layer of crumpled paper to the
bottom of the box. This layer will help protect the items inside and helps keep
your items clean in case the bottom of the box were to get dirty. When they
finish packing each box, add another layer of crumpled packing paper to the
top before sealing the carton.
 Soft items like pillows, towels, and clothes can simply be set into the box. No
special tricks necessary.
 When packing small appliances or speaker components, it is a good idea to
individually wrap the items to provide additional protection. Wrap items in
either plain packing paper or the brown mirror wrap depending on the items
size.

14
 Pots and pans are durable items and should not need to be individually
wrapped in paper. Set these items carefully into the cartons and add crumpled
packing paper around the items to keep them from moving around inside the
box.
 If they are packing breakable items, like casserole dishes or vases, use a dish
pack instead of a medium carton.
 Lamp shades should be packed in their own box. Do not add any additional
items to the carton. Pack each lampshade in its own box, and choose the
smallest box size that the lampshade comfortably fits inside. Add lots of
crumpled paper to protect the lampshade.

2.9 Corporate Social Responsibilities

It’s impossible to talk about packaging these days without the topic of
sustainability coming up. At PSI, they recognize their responsibility to the
environment, and they continually strive to decrease their impact and do more
with less.
Another related term hearing more and more these days is corporate social
responsibility (CSR), which goes beyond sustainability. CSR refers to a
company’s practice of taking responsibility for its effects not only on the
environment but also on people’s social well-being. CSR is about having respect
—for the environment, for communities, and for society as a whole.

16
According to a study by Cone Communications, “91 percent of global consumers
expect companies to do more than make a profit, but also operate responsibly to
address social and environmental issues.”

Role of packaging play in CSR

According to consulting agency Social Lab, sustainable packaging might
be the Holy Grail of CSR. It’s that important to consumers.
In general, packaging is a wonderful thing—it protects essential products
such as food, medicines, and more from damage during shipping. But not all
packaging is created equally. Some retailers overpackage their products. They use
boxes or bags that are far too large for the products they house. They use
excessive amounts of filler material or tape. In short, they’re wasteful.

They do this by:

• Eliminating waste by designing packaging that uses minimal tapes and fillers
• Increasing our customers’ material grades to ensure their manufacturing facilities
are getting more than a single use from their packaging
• Using responsible printing practices and materials including recycled corrugated
cardboard and eco-friendly inks
• Recycling an average of 10 tons of corrugated scrap per day between our three
facilities
• Reclaiming 100% of our wastewater
• Relying on roof-top solar panels to generate 45% of the daily electricity demand
at our corrugated sheeting facility

trends

Strengths:

18
 Carton boxes are similar to a cardboard but the major difference will be the
boxes are more durable, and they do not have to worry about damaging
their goods when they are using carton boxes. It is widely used for
packaging in the food industry because of the quality and safety of the
boxes as it is made with eco-friendly materials.
 These boxes are sometimes known as brown boxes and widely used for
packaging fresh vegetables and fruits. If they are wondering what material
is used for making these boxes, it is made with fibrous pulp extracted from
pine trees.
 Using carton boxes is cheaper for companies because it is made of
recycled cardboard boxes. Packaging company can break down these
boxes and the method is similar to making carton box from beginning. Not
only they are able to save cost when purchasing these boxes, but they will
be helping the environment too.
 Another big advantage is these material do not have sharp edges which
might harm them while those are transporting those boxes or packing
goods with it. It can also handle pressure well, and they can stack one
against each other without worrying about damaging the boxes.
 As stated earlier, those boxes are made of recycled paper, so it is safe for
the environment. This goes well if their company is heading towards
‘green technology’ status. The materials used for manufacturing these
boxes are organic so in no way you are harming the environment. There
are no harmful chemicals used in the process of making these packaging
types.
 Carton boxes have smooth surfaces so they can print label stickers and
stick it on them. Not only they will give the packaging company easy time
with good labelling, but also it can be good branding for their packaging.
Remember these boxes are made with lasting materials and can be use for
a long time so as long as your boxes is out there in the market, it will
provide as a good marketing strategy. They can print your logo, company
name, phone number and even your website address on the packaging
labels.

19
 Finally, another major advantage of using carton boxes for business is
those boxes are available throughout the year. Weather and change of
environment have no effect on these packaging and will not be out of
stock. For business, this is extremely important because the operational of
the company must run smoothly without any hiccups.
 For any needs for Box Packaging, they can ask us for advice. They will
help find the right solution for product packaging. They are specialised in
Plastic and Box packaging that can be printed & tailor made and branded
as per requirements. They are based in Mauritius, value a lot customer
service and can deliver easily to the region ON TIME. They are experts in
manufacturing of plastic bags, packaging, films, tubing, and shrink
packaging in the plastic industry.

Weakness:

 Not for heavy products: These boxes are not for packaging of certain
heavy items.
 May get deformed: Corrugated cardboard boxes may get deformed under
extreme pressure.
 Not best for weatherproofing: They are not the best option for
weatherproofing like water and other types of liquid.

CHAPTER 4: WORK FLOW MODEL

23
The process of manufacture of corrugated fibreboard & boxes is quite
simple. The unit mainly comprises of two sections viz. corrugated board making
and box making section.

4.1 Manufacture of Corrugated Board

Corrugated board is made of a corrugated paper sheet of paper glued to the

facings of flat paper, usually Kraft. A corrugating machine is employed for the
corrugation of flat sheet and preparation of corrugated flexible 2 ply board. The
machine is called as single-face corrugating machine. One layer of paper becomes
corrugated after passing through the heated fluted rolls and the other is brought in
contact with the former having been glued at the tips. These two sheets get pasted
together and are wound in rolls. The resulting roll is known as single face or 2-ply
corrugated board.

By cutting this roll with board cutter machine; gluing the corrugated side
on pasting machine & then placing 3rd ply of paper over it, double face or 3-ply
corrugated board is produced. Similarly, board to board can be pasted to form
thicker boards i.e. 5-ply, 7-ply and 9- ply boards.

4.2 Manufacture of Boxes

The corrugated board produced as above is dried (for drying of glue) and
may now be processed further to produce-corrugated boxes.

The size of a box is always given in terms of the inside dimensions, with
the longer dimension (length) of the opening given first followed by width and
depth. The most economical box for a given cubic contents has the proportions of
2:1:2 (L:W:D). However, other proportions may also be used. For manufacturing
boxes of any particular dimensions, it is first decided as to how the blanks for the
boxes should be cut to minimise the wastage.

24
4.2.1 Calculation of Weight of a Box

Weight of the box is equal to area of the sheet multiplied by weight/cu.m. the
sheet.
Area of sheet (i) Length of the sheet required, 'a'
= 2L + 2W + 2 inches.
(ii) Width of the sheet required 'b'
=W+H
Where L = Length of the box
W = Width of the box
H = Height of the box
2" is the stitching margin.

4.2.2 Weight/sq. m. of sheets

It will depend upon the number of plies & g.s.m. (grams/sq.m.) of paper.
For the corrugating media, on an average 45% extra material is consumed
compared with the plain one depending upon the size of flute. So, weight per gsm.
of a 3 ply board would be as follows :
- Gsm of top liner + (1.45 x gsm of media) + gsm bottom liner.

4.3 Fabrication of Boxes

The various steps involved in the fabrication of corrugated fibre board

boxes are: Slitting & creasing; slotting; flap or corner cutting and stitching or
gluing. simultaneously carried over a rotary cutting & creasing machine. The
trimmed and creased sheet is slotted and flap out on an eccentric sloter. Finally, it
is either stitched using stitching machine or glued/taped manually. The boxes are
shipped in the form of flat tube which is set up and closed by the packer.
4.4 Printing

25
There are different methods of printing the corrugated boxes. Some of the
small-scale manufacturers are printing the boxes after fabrication, by the
technique of screen printing. However, printing can be done in a printer slotter
machine. In this machine, the blanks are printed using soft rubber dies and the
body score or vertical score and slots are introduced in the board. Printing can also
be performed on the paper sheet, before making corrugated sheet/board. The layer
of paper which will come outside of the box, is printed on flexographic machine.

3. Creasing machine:

30
Source: www.indiamart.com

Whether the need to make brochures, booklets, or anything else that needs
perfect folds, using a creasing, perforating, and/or scoring machine is a great way
to give the documents a polished, professional finish. Creasing is quickly
becoming the preferred method for creating clean folds without cracking or doing
damage to the toner on digitally printed media. There are multiple options when it
comes to these machines including air fed and friction fed creasers. Each option is
useful depending the type of creasing jobs the plan on doing, whether it is short to
medium volume jobs or large volume jobs. There are also different types of
creases each machine can perform for different types of products they are making.
These types of creases include a tri-fold, z-fold, half, letter, and the list goes on.

Most creasers vary in the amount of creases per page that can be
performed. This gives the even more options to choose from when finding the
perfect creasing machine for the and/or their print shop. Most creasers can also
perforate and score documents as well, which means that they are combining three
separate products into one. While scoring is very similar to creasing it is very
valuable when making professional booklets and brochures. There is no sub-
categories in this category.

31
4. Slotting machine:

Source: www.indiamart.com

The slotting machine (slotter) is a reciprocating type of machine tool

similar to a shaper or a planer machine. It may be considered as a vertical shaper.
The main difference between a slotter and a shaper is the direction of the cutting
action. The slotting machine operates in a manner similar to the shaper. However,
the cutting tool moves vertically direction rather than in a horizontal direction.
The work piece is held stationary. The slotting machine has a vertical ram and a
hand or power operated rotary table.

32
Principal Parts of a Slotting Machine:
Above figure shows a slotting machine and its various parts. The main
parts of a slotting machine are discussed as under:
Bed or case: Bed or case is made up of cast iron. It supports column, tables, ram,
driving mechanism, etc. the top of the bed carries horizontal ways which the
worktable can transverse.
Cross-slide: Cross-slide can be moved parallel to the face of the column. The
circular worktable is mounted on the top of the cross-slide.
Hand wheels: Hand wheels are provided for rotating the table for the longitudinal
and cross traverse.
Column is the vertical member: They are made up of cast iron and it houses the
driving mechanism. The vertical front face of the column is accurately finished for
providing ways along which the ram moves up and down.
