There are three main types of bearing devices appropriate for conventional bridge structures: pot bearings, elastomeric bearings, and spherical/cylindrical PTFE bearings. Pot bearings can be free sliding, guided sliding, or fixed. Elastomeric bearings consist of elastomeric material bonded between steel plates. Spherical/cylindrical PTFE bearings use PTFE sliding surfaces within an outer confinement ring.

There are many types of bearing devices that can be used for bridges.

For the range of conventional

structures covered in these design standards, the most appropriate types are pot bearings, elastomeric
bearings and spherical/cylindrical PTFE bearings as shown in Figures 11.11.1.1, 11.11.1.2 and 11.11.1.3.
