Assignment No. 1
Problem 1:
Prove that the voltage drop in an n-stage Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier circuit is given
by,
Problem 2:
Problem 3:
A four-stage Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier circuit with capacitances all equal to 0.05
µF, is fed from 150 kV. If 1.7 mA of current is to be supplied to the load by this circuit,
determine:
(a) the ripple
(b) the voltage drop and regulation if the supply frequency is (i) 50 Hz (ii) 150 Hz
Determine the same parameters for an eight-stage generator for a load current of 3.5 mA, the
supply frequency being 150 Hz.
Problem 4:
A 250 kVA, 230 V/250 kV testing transformer has resistance and reactance of 1.5% and 6%
respectively is to be used as a resonant transformer at 50 Hz to test a cable specimen at 500
kV. Neglect dielectric loss of the cable, determine the series inductance required if the load
capacitance is 0.008 µF. What will be the input voltage and power to be fed to the
transformer, if the inductor coil is assumed to have 2% resistance, based on the rating of the
transformer? Neglect magnetizing current and core losses of transformer.
Problem 5:
Prove that the efficiency of the impulse generator circuit shown in Fig P-5 is given by,
Figure P-5
Problem 6:
A single-stage impulse generator circuit shown in Figure P-5 has a stage capacitance of 0.1
µF. The wave-front and wave-tail control resistors are 285 Ω and 540 Ω respectively.
Determine the wave-front and wave-tail times of the impulse voltage across an insulator of
capacitance 1000 pF. If the charging voltage is 100 kV, determine the peak value of the
output impulse voltage and the efficiency of the generator. Also, determine the energy rating.
Problem 7:
A eight-stage impulse generator has a charging voltage of 100 kV and stage capacitance of
0.13 µF. The test specimen capacitance is 500 pF. Find the wave-front and wave-tail
resistances required to produce 1.2/50 µs impulse wave. What will be the maximum output
voltage.
