IGNACIAN MARIAN LEADERSHIP CAMP

School Year 2019-2020

THEME: Transformative Ignacian Marian Education: Creating Horizons for the Youth towards Becoming
Beloved, Gifted and Empowered

INTRODUCTION

As the Philippine Catholic Church celebrates the Year of the Youth, St. Mary’s College of
Borongan, Inc. (SMCB) takes on this theme: Transformative Ignacian Marian Education: Creating
Horizons for the Youth towards Becoming Beloved, Gifted and Empowered Evangelizers.

This theme challenges the school on how to broaden the experiences of the youth who are
entrusted to their care so that they may have new ideas that can give a new meaning to their life making
them effective evangelizers.

The youth are vital members of the Body of Christ, the Church and as such they are disciples sent
on a mission to preach the Gospel. The Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines envisions that the
celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Christianization of the Philippines will be a time to celebrate a
bountiful harvest from the youth – youth committed to families, to the Church and to the country with a
renewed passion to proclaim the Word, ready to work with their communities and the Church, and
willing to share in molding a just and peaceful world through missionary involvement.

In the letter of the youth to the Bishops they expressed their needs as well as their strengths and
limitations. It is important that we listen to them since they are willing and open to learn and to grow
when provided with opportunities to do so.

In view of the four goals of the Year of the Youth: 1) Youth in Formation, 2) Youth in the
Community, Church and Society, 3) Youth in Mission, and 4) Youth Ministry and Youth Minister, what
concrete ways can the school do so that our students may have a deeper encounter with Jesus, like the
two disciples of Emmaus, knowing their deep desire to converse with Him to tell Him their situation,
concerns and youthful dreams for the Church and society? What more can the school do to broaden
the horizons of the youth so that they may become more “beloved, gifted and empowered” fulfilling
their mission to serve the Church and their fellow youth? (Adapted: EMC Visayas)

RATIONALE

Following the overarching theme for the Year of the Youth, SMCB commits herself to the
formation of the Youth entrusted to her care especially those aspiring leaders to lead their co-youth.
From a young age, these youths learn about leadership by watching the people around them. They
observed how others respond to criticism, confront failures, and communicate to large groups thus begin
to develop their own habits and thought processes.

Through social and emotional learning, their parents and teachers encourage them to begin
analyzing their habits and behaviors to create long-term leadership goals.

The invited participants of this Student Leadership Camp for aspiring leaders in the campus are
convened to explore, discover, and confirm their self-knowledge in terms of their talents and leadership
capabilities and thus improve and develop self-mastery, self-management and self-discipline. They must
be given time and opportunity to think about their own goals. “Leadership development is an important
part of that process of developing students’ leadership skills,” said Diana Davis, a Social and Emotional
Learning Curriculum Supervisor. “We want students to understand that they have the capability of
becoming leaders, no matter what their age or involvement in campus activities are,” she added.
SMCB opens limitless opportunities to all Marian Students by organizing activities to prepare
aspiring leaders to serve their school in the Marian Student Government (MSG).

Through cooperative learning activities, conferences and service learning projects, students will
be able to build on these skills and empower them to embrace servant leadership and become positive
