Mid Surface Mesh

This document provides instructions for meshing a midsurface in multiple steps: 1) Create a midsurface manually by selecting surface pairs or automatically using progressive face pairing, 2) Display the FEM file and show only the midsurface, 3) Mesh the midsurface using CQUAD4 shell elements with an element size of 1 and split quads for mesh quality.

Mid Surface Mesh

Activity: Mesh a midsurface

You will learn how to:
• Manually create a midsurface.
• Automatically create a midsurface.
• Stitch a midsurface.
• Mesh a midsurface.

Launch the Mesh a midsurface activity.

Reset the dialog box memory
The options you select in NX dialog boxes are preserved for the next time you open the
same dialog box within an NX session. Restore the default settings to ensure that the dialog
boxes are in the expected initial state for each step of the activity.

Promote the idealized part
Before you can modify the idealized part, you must place an associative copy of the master
part file in the idealized part file. To do this, you can use the Promote command or the
Wave Link command.

Mesh a midsurface
Create a midsurface using the manual method
You can create midsurfaces using both manual and automatic methods. Manual midsurface
creation is mainly used when the automatic methods fail to produce the desired results.

Create Face Pair

The surface (face) pair is listed in the dialog box.

The following animation shows the selection of surface pairs for the remainder of the
model. Rather than continuing with the manual selection, delete the surface pair that you
just created.

Create a midsurface using tangent faces
The Midsurface by Face Pairs dialog box is still open from the previous step.

All 14 surfaces that make up the top side of the part are selected because of their tangent
relationship to each other.

Create Face Pair

The midsurface is created through the entire model using the single midsurface pair that
contains all top and bottom surfaces in a single pair.

Using the steps you learned previously, delete the midsurface pair so that you can use
automatic creation.
Leave the Midsurface by Face Pairs dialog box open for the next step.

Mesh a midsurface
Create a midsurface using the automatic method
The Midsurface by Face Pairs dialog box is still open from the previous step.

Automatically Create Face Pairs

The same midsurface is created as in the previous step, but it is made up of one
automatically created face pair.
