Change Is The Only Constant

Heraclitus said that the only constant in life is change. While change affects everyone differently, it is something we can all expect to experience regularly. How we cope with and embrace changes determines how we are able to live with them. Though change can be difficult, viewing it as a natural part of life and learning from both small, daily changes as well as major life changes helps us adapt and grow over time.

Change is the only Constant

Heraclitus, “The Obscure” and “The Weeping Philosopher” as he was called, said “The only thing that is
constant is Change”.

Life changes every day for every person in some way or the other. We expect the seasons to change, we
expect ourselves to grow older, we expect to watch our kids get married, we expect us to retire from
our jobs, play with our grandchildren… We even recognize that sickness and death are expected events
in our life.

Change affects us all and we each deal with it differently. This variable becomes the only constant in life
that we can be sure of happening. To expect “change” brings us hope during challenging and
unexpected life events. This same thought also brings in fear when the last thing we want is change.

Coping or dealing with and overcoming difficulties and problems may vary with each individual and are
mostly based on age and experiences each person has had throughout life.

With age we gradually realize, it’s not the circumstances or the changes that dictate how life would go;
Instead it’s the way we handle the changes and disruption. No matter the changes, how we embrace
them would forever impact how we are able to live with the change.

It is not difficult to forget that life will always be changing – we face something new every moment of
the day! We need to embrace the changes that life has in store for us – they will make things flow more
smoothly and we can bounce back from the major changes hopefully a little easier. We just must always
keep in mind that life truly is what we make of it…

Change is constant, even big change. But it is all a part of life and we can all learn and grow from it. And
we can all help each other through. If a young child experiences an event that is beyond his or her skill
level, he or she needs an adult to help learn new coping strategies or adapt a current skill. Being aware
of the developmental tasks the child or youth is learning will help the adult identify the next steps to
take. Adults can help by loving the child, talking with the child, showing the child new ways of dealing
with the change, and accepting the child’s reactions to the event.
