Unit 2

This document contains 11 problems involving determining support reactions and resultants for various structural systems with multiple applied forces. The problems involve finding support reactions and resultants for beams, plates, rods, and cable car systems with applied forces shown in accompanying diagrams. Analytical solutions require using principles of statics, including drawing free body diagrams, to reduce systems of forces to equivalent force systems and determine support reactions.

1. Four forces act on a 700mm X 375mm plate as shown in fig.

a) Find the
resultant of these forces b) Locate the two points where the line of action of the
resultant intersects the edge of the plate.

2. Determine the resultant of the parallel coplanar force system shown in Figures .

3. A bracket is subjected to the system of forces and couples as shown in Fig. 2.63.
Find the resultant of the system and the point of intersection of its line of action
with (a) line AB, (b) line BC and (c) line CD.
4. Reduce the system of forces shown in fig to a force – couple system at A

5. A cable car used for carrying materials in a hydroelectric project is at rest on a

track formed at an angle of 30° with the vertical. The gross weight of the car and its
load is 60 kN and its centroid is at a point 800 mm from the track half way between
the axles. The car is held by a cable as shown in Fig. The axles of the car are at a
distance 1.2 m. Find the tension in the cables and reaction at each of the axles
neglecting friction of the track.

6. A Uniform meter rod AB, assumed rigid of mass 0.5 kg is suspended from
its ends in an inclined position and a mass of 1 kg is suspended from a point
D, as shown in fig. Determine the tension in each string. Where should be
the suspended mass be placed in order to get equal tension in the strings.
7. A rod AB of weight 200 N is supported by a cable BD and the corner of wall and
floor surface as shown in fig. Find the reaction at A and tension in the cord.

8. A beam is acted by system of forces as shown n figure. Find support reactions

9. Two beams AB and CD shown in figure. A and D are hinged supports, B and
C are roller supports. A) Sketch the free body diagram of beam AB and find
support reactions. B) Sketch the free body diagram of beam CD and find
support reactions

10. Find the support reactions at P, Q ,T, and V for the beam subjected to the
loading as shown in figure.

11. Find the support reactions for the beam subjected to the loading as shown in
figure.
