1. Intended application and scope of usage
The type MPP anemometer, as shown in Fig. 1, is a stationary measurement
device that is used to measure the flow velocity of air in underground mine ventilation
systems, as well as in aboveground plants.
The measuring element of the anemometer is a vane sensor. The device can
also detect the flow direction.
The equipment is able to co-operate with that measurement data transmission
systems offering various electrical transmission standards. It is possible to define
work in the following systems:
frequency 8 – 10 – 12 kHz,
voltage 0.4 – 1.2 – 2.0 V,
current 4 – 12 – 20 mA,
digital RS485.
During the execution of measurements, the anemometer can operate only in one
selected system, following the prior programming of the configuration by the
manufacturer or an authorised representative of the manufacturer.
The measurement range of the device is ± (0.20–20.00) m/s. It is possible to
select other - smaller - ranges of measured velocities, in accordance with the
technical data set forward hereunder.
In addition, the anemometer is equipped with two high-low, potentialless,
galvanically isolated outlets, which enable the controlling of external equipment. If
use is made of the digital RS 485 output, the measurement data may also be sent to
an external display. The digital inlet is intended for the user-defined setting of the
selected anemometer operating parameters, as well as for service applications.
A characteristic feature of the anemometer is the possibility of registering the
measurement data in the memory, if the transmission-power line is disrupted. The
anemometer will then function as a device that automatically gathers data on a so-
called "black box" basis. Apart from the measurement data, it registers the real time
of the measurements that are performed as well as the temperature of the
environment (option). This type of work can be used for autonomous velocity
measurements at points that cannot be connected to the transmission-power grid.
The construction of the anemometer makes it possible to utilise it in zones
with a gas explosion hazard, in accordance with the conditions as set forward in the
manufacturer's documentation.
Elements of the anemometer's housing and vane sensor are made from acid
resistant steel.

4. Construction
The MPP anemometer, as shown in Fig. 1, has been constructed as two
interpenetrating pipes, which are located at an angle of 90o with respect to each
other. The pipe with a greater diameter contains a vane sensor (7). The inlets to the
measurement section are protected by vertical bars. In the vertical pipe there is an
electronic system covered with a hatch (2) that is affixed by means of screws. The
anemometer is equipped with a beam with openings (1), which makes it possible to
fix the device at the point of the execution of measurements. Once the anemometer
is set in the appropriate position, the beam is immobilised by the screwing in of the
arresting screws (6). Depending on the construction, the screws should be affixed by
means of a no. 6 hexagon socket screw key or a no. 13 box spanner. Electrical
signals are channelled to three sockets (3, 4, and 5) attached to the vertical pipe.
The sockets are secured by nuts. The anemometer is made from 304L type acid
resistant steel.
The version of the anemometer with an external temperature sensor (factory
designation MPP/T), the sensor (8) has been located on the anemometer cover as
shown in Figure 3.

Once you click the "Recorder" button, access is enabled in the "Data
recorder" window to the data gathered in the memory. The data is arranged with the
most recent entries at the top. The memory overwrites the oldest data. The table
contains information about the time and date of the execution of a measurement,
and about the temperature and velocity. The data is recorded at 1-second intervals.
Once the data is read, it may be saved to a text file with the extension *.mpp. The
"Data recorder" window is also used to modify the real-time clock. The current time
from the computer to which the device is connected is entered in the anemometer.
Once you click the "Remote measurement" button, the anemometer enables
the transmission of measurement data online to a computer (Fig. 16). The user has
access to information about the velocity and temperature, and the state of the battery
supporting power voltage in emergency situations and in communication with the
telemetric line.
8. Operating recommendations
The anemometer is a service-free device. It requires maintenance consisting in the
systematic cleaning of the housing and the measurement section inside which the
vane sensor is located:
Cleaning is to be performed if a considerable quantity of, for example, coal dust
deposits on the device, which could stop the vane of the anemometer.
The anemometer may be operated and maintained solely by duly trained
employees.
Operation must proceed in accordance with the terms and conditions as set forward
in the technical and operational documentation (operator's manual).
The transmission of data to the computer may be effected solely in rooms or zones
that are under a nonexplosive atmosphere.
IT IS PROHIBITED TO:
Open the anemometer cover and then in any way interfere with the electronic
or mechanical systems.
Place the anemometer directly in streams of air contaminated with
considerable quantities of dust.
Tolerate such quantities of dust (or other contaminant) deposits that could
cause the vane to stop.
Wash the anemometer with a stream of pressurised water or a stream of
pressurised air.
Expose the device to mechanical shocks or vibrations.
Rapidly introduce the anemometer to a high velocity air stream.
Introduce any objects inside the bars protecting the inlet to the vane
measurement space.
22
IT IS RECOMMENDED TO:
Perform an annual overhaul; this should be carried out by the manufacturer
or an institution authorised thereby. In the event that this requirement is not
satisfied, the manufacturer shall be free of any liability for the negative
consequences that could ensue therefrom.
The overhaul is to be performed immediately in the event of any
suspicion as to the correctness of the anemometers readings.
Verify the readings of the MPP anemometer on a monthly basis by using a
manual anemometer placed on an extension arm. The manual anemometer
must be calibrated at an accredited laboratory, while its technical condition
cannot give rise to any suspicion as to the quality of the readings.
The selection of the point of installation of the anemometer must be
preceded by an analysis of the fulfilment of the conditions for obtaining
the correct result of measurements. This should be executed by a
person possessing sufficient knowledge of fluid mechanics and
ventilation.
9. Calibration and regulation
Calibration of the anemometer is to be performed annually at the laboratory, the
address of which has been provided hereunder, or at another laboratory accredited
for calibrating anemometric sensors for the velocity range appropriate for the MPP
anemometer.
In the event of any suspicions as to the correctness of the anemometer's
readings, calibration must be performed immediately.
It is prohibited to use an anemometer if there is any justified suspicion that its
velocity readings are incorrect.
