Duct System is a collection of tubes that distributes the heated or cooled air to the various

rooms. This system can make a big difference in both the cost and the effectiveness of heating and
cooling your building. Ducts and plenums that are portions of heating, cooling , absorption, or
evaporative cooling, or product conveying systems shall comply with the requirement in accordance
with American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)
fundamentals, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA), or by
other approved methods.

There are different standards in terms of materials to be used in creating duct system. The
ducts, plenums, and fittings may be constructed of concrete, clay, or ceremics when installed in the
ground or in concrete slab, provided that the joints are tightly sealed. Ducts that are constructed using
metal uses a table to be a reference. Regarding the combustibles within the ducts and plenums, the
materials exposed within ducts or plenums shall be non-combustible. The temperature of the air to be
conveyed in any of these calsses of ducts shall not exceed to two hundred fifty degree farenheit or one
hundred twenty two degree celcius.

Also, factory made air ducts needs to comply with the requirements needed. These air ducts
shall be approved for the use intended or shall conform to the requirements of the reference standard
for air ducts. Each portion of a factory made air duct system shall be identified by the manufacturer with
a label or other suitable identification indicating compliance with the referenced standard for air ducts.
In some cases, Vibration insolators were installed between mechanical equipment and metal ducts(or
casings) shall be made of an approved material and shall not exceed ten inches in length.

There are also requirements regarding the installation of ducts. Ducts installed in locations
where they are exposed to mechanical damage by vehicles or from other causes shall be protected by
approved barriers. Installers shall provide the manufacturer’s field fabrication installation instructions. It
must have the protection against flood damage.

There must be crawl space of vertical clearance of eighteen inches. Ducts shall be fastened in
place when suspended from above, it shall be installed on two opposite sides of each duct and shall be
riveted, bolted, or metal screwed on each side. It shall be braced and guyed to prevent lateral or
horizontal swings. Ducts and plenums shall be insulated to achieve the minimum thermal value.
Regarding cold air duct, it shall be insulated wherever necessary to prevent condensation problems in
the long run. Materials to be use shall have a mold, humidity, and erosion resistant surface.

Moreover, different dampers should be installed like smoke dampers, fire dampers, and the
ceiling radiation dampers. Smoke dampers, fire dampers, and the said ceiling radiation dampers shall be
installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions where required by the building
code. In addition, fire dampers should have been tested for closure under airflow conditions and shall be
labeled for both maximum airflow permitted and direction of flow. Lastly, ceiling radiation dampers shall
be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions in the fire-resistive ceiling
element of floor ceiling and roof-ceiling assemblies where required by the building code.
Perforated cielings shall be permitted to be used for air supply within the limitations of this
section. Exit corridors, where required to be of fire-resistive construction by the building code, shall not
have ventilating ceilings. Perforations within suspended ceiling tiles have been used ever since the start
of production. These days, the main purpose of the perforations is largely focused on the acoustics of a
ceiling panel, particularly sound absorptionThe perforations, often in the form of little pinholes or larger
fissures, create a larger surface area within the face of the tile, which creates a larger absorption
platform for the sound waves to be ‘trapped’ and absorbed within the tile. The problem encountered
over the years by manufacturers, architects and specifiers was that many customers were after tiles that
looked as plain white as possible, but at the same time had good acoustics at a reasonable price.
Perforations, especially fissured pattern tiles, were gradually deemed not as aesthetically pleasing as
plain tiles.

Duct system shall have automatic shutoffs. It must also have the air-moving systems and smoke
detectors. Air moving systems supplying air in excess of 2000 cubic feet per minute to encloded spaces
within buildings shall be equipped with an automatic shutoff.
