Staff Working from Home
Lead by Matthew Lee
It was brought up in a staff meeting last week that some staff were feeling like there
should be a policy in place regarding working from home. Staff who do not have specific
administrative jobs are finding it hard to concentrate in the busy office environment.
They don’t want to feel guilty about working from home, as not all staff may support this.
Matt is concerned about procedural issues/practical things and how others would be
feeling about this who’s position won’t allow working like this. John has concerns- what
will this cost, will the company provide the computers, do we need insurance?
Samantha backs the concerns about costs after reviewing the financial statement for
the previous year. Alex doesn’t see costing being an issue and most employees already
have computers at home.
Alex is on board saying that this would be a good idea for members with families, they
can have more input during holiday periods at home and it would help reduce stress.
Rachel doesn’t think it would be fair as it’s not possible for her team to work from home.
This could present an image of alienating some staff.
Samantha is concerned about the insurance and liabilities. John answers that the
company would be held liable if there is an injury sustained at home. Health, safety and
insurance should be investigated further.
Matthew adds that it is a competitive market and flexible working from home schedules
that are family friendly are increasing and something that happens in the field. This
should be further explored, and the team would be fed up if it was just dropped. It allows
for more flexibility and is accommodating to working parents. The office is a very busy,
loud, crowded and difficult environment to work in and Samantha and John have been
trying to address this. This would not be fair for Rachel’s team as their work is all in the
office and cannot be done from home.
Matthew and John are to research this proposal further, look at other organizations who
have taken this practise on board and the costs possibly involved for insurance. They
will present the information at the next meeting in two weeks.
