Grade 7 Math: Understanding Polygons

This document contains a lesson plan on teaching students about polygons. The objectives are for students to define polygons, identify different types, solve for the sum of interior angles, and understand polygons' importance. Students will name polygons, determine how many triangles can be formed from their vertices, and complete a table calculating angle sums for various polygons with 3 to 12 sides. To evaluate learning, students will solve problems finding angle sums for polygons with 20, 25, and 22 sides.

A Lesson Design on Mathematics 7

Quarter: Fourth Date: Feb 26, 2016

Time Frame: 1 hour School Year: 2015-2016
Year and Section: Grade 7 Time: 8:00 – 9:00 am

Competency: Illustrates polygons: (a) convexity; (b) angles; (c) sides.

I – Objectives:
At the end of the one hour period, the students shall be able to:
 Define polygon;
 Name and identify the different kinds of polygons;
 Solve the sum of the measures of the angles of a polygon; and,
 Cite the importance of the polygons in our daily life.

II – Learning Content:
Subject Matter: Polygons
References: Jose-Dilao, Soledad, and Bernabe, Julieta G. Geometry, SD
Publications Inc., 2009.
Galangue, de Leon, and Pascual, Ferdinand C. Geometry,
Innovative Educational Materials, Inc.
Materials: Illustrations, Cartolina/Construction Paper, Marker, Scotch Tape
III – Learning Experiences/ Procedures:
A. Routinary Activities:
1. Prayer
2. Energizer
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Classroom Management
5. Review
Ask the student about previous topic, the classification of angles.
B. Mood Settings
Motivation:
Look at the pictures and observe.

Guide questions: In the pictures shown, what have you noticed? How many sides do
these objects have?

C. Presentation of the Lesson

Ask the students to define a polygon based from the given pictures.

A polygon is a plane figure that is formed by three or more segments called sides.

D. Lesson Proper
a. Pre – activity
1. Divide the class into halves.
2. Disseminate instructions to the class.
3. Present the names of polygons and their sides.

b. Activity 1 (Find my partner)

The students are group into two. Each group needs 10 volunteers. The
volunteer from group 1 will hold the different names of the polygon and
the volunteer from group 2 will hold the picture of the polygon.

Since the group 1 are holding the different names of the polygon, they will
be the one to find its corresponding image of the polygon from the group
2. And after that one, they will paste it on the board.

c. Activity 2. (Complete the Table)

Questions: What kind of polygon is this? How many triangles can be
formed if diagonals are drawn from a given vertex?

The sum of the measures of the interior angle of n sides is (n – 2)180°,

where n is the number of sides.
Ask the students to complete the table.
Find the sum of the measure of the angle of the given polygons.

No. of Polygon No. of Sum of

Sides Triangles measure of
angle
3 Triangle 1 180°
4 Quadrilateral 2 360°
5 Pentagon 540°
6 Hexagon 4
7 Heptagon 5 900°
8 Octagon 6
9 Nonagon 1260°
10 Decagon 8
11 Undecagon 9 1620°
12 Dodecagon 1800°
n-sides n – gon n–2 (n – 2)180°

d. Analysis

Guide Questions:
1. What is a polygon?
2. Give me examples of polygons. how many triangles do they have?
e. Abstraction

1. How will you describe a polygon?

2. How will you solve the sum of the measure of the angle?

f. Application

Activity: Find the sum.

Find the sum of measures of angles with a number of sides of the following:
1. 19

2. 14

E. Summary

The lesson is all about polygons and how they can find the sum of
measures of angles in each polygon.

F. Valuing

Cite the importance of polygons in our daily life.

IV. Evaluation
Direction: In a ½ crosswise of paper. Find the sum of measures of angles with
a number of sides of the following:
1. 20
2. 25
3. 22
V. Assignment
In a short bond paper, search 10 pictures that represents the different
kinds of polygon.
