Four Sons of Horus
Four Sons of Horus
Horus (the elder) had numerous wives and children, and his 'four sons' were grouped
together and generally said to be born of Isis. Imsety was one. The other three were
Duamutef, Hapy and Qebehsenuef. They were born from a lotus flower and were solar
gods associated with the creation. They were retrieved from the waters of Nun by Sobek
on the orders of Re. It was believed that Anubis gave them the funerary duties of
mummification, the Opening of the Mouth, the burial of Osiris and all men. Horus later
made them protectors of the four cardinal points (north, south, east and west). In the
Hall of Ma'at, they sat on a lotus flower in front of Osiris. Most commonly, however,
they were remembered as the protectors of the internal organs of the deceased. Each son
protected an organ and each son was protected by a goddess.
Canopic Jars were used by the ancient Egyptian during the rituals of mummification.
These were used as containers in which to hold the internal organs of the deceased that
was going to be mummified. Before mummifying their pharaohs and dead, the ancient
Egyptians took out the internal soft organs. These organs contained a lot of fluid and
could cause the body to quickly putrefy and decompose. Since the heart was thought to
embody the soul, it was left inside the body, and the brain was thought only to be the
origin of mucus, so it was reduced to liquid, siphoned off, and discarded. This left the
stomach, liver, intestines and lungs, each being stored in their own jar. The jars had lids
or stoppers that were each shaped as the head of one of the four sons of Horus.
Imsety (also known as Amset, Mestha, or Ameshet, meaning "the kindly one") was
portrayed as a mummified human. His role was to protect the liver of the deceased and
he was the guardian of the South. He was protected by the goddess Isis. You can use his
energies to heal the diseases and disorders of the liver.
Hapy (also known as Apephi, meaning “runner”) was portrayed as a mummified ape.
Hapy’s role was to protect the lungs of the deceased and he was the guardian of the
North. He was protected by the goddess Nephthys. You can use his energies to heal the
diseases and disorders of the lungs.

To give distant healing, sit on a chair with your eyes closed and your hands on your lap
with the palms facing up. Visualise your patient or their name in the palm of your hand
and place your palms together. Intend that the desired god’s energies flow to heal and
cleanse. Let the energy-flow run for about 10 minutes. Use this same method for self-
healing.
The four gods’ energies could also be used to charge water, crystals, jewellery, wands,
candles etc. Simply hold in you hands what you wish to charge and activate the energies
by intent. Let the energy-flow run for about 10 minutes.
You can also vibrate, chant or recite each god’s name as a mantra when you meditate,
give healing or charge an object.
Attunement
There are four attunements, one for each god. I generally use the higher-self attunement
method to pass on these energies, but you can use the chi-ball or any other method you
wish. You can attune several people at the same time and there is no limit on re-
attunements.
