Project charter

• Once a project proposal is written, a project


charter is a critical step in the Project Life
Cycle of a project that describes the project
 vision,
 objectives,
 scope,
 organization,
 implementation plan.
Project charter

• This document helps guide the project


manager in the right direction for your
project and help gain buy in from your
stakeholders as to how the project is
organized and will be implemented.
Project charter

• The charter also helps the project


manager to control the scope of your
project by defining exactly what it is that
you want to achieve in your project.
Project charter

• The project charter is usually a short


document that refers to more detailed
documents such as a new offering request
or a request for proposal.
The purpose of the project
charter is to document:
• Reasons for undertaking the project
• Objectives and constraints of the project
• Directions concerning the solution
• Identities of the main stakeholders
• In-scope and out-of-scope items
• High level risk management plan
• Communication plan
• Target project benefits
• High level budget and spending authority
