EFFECTS NOF STUDENTS’ ALCOHOLISM ON THEIR ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE IN JOSE RIZAL MEMOTIAL STATE UNIVERSITY, DIPOLOG

CAMPUS

Introduction

Alcohol is part of life for most Filipino adults, as well as for many university students.
For them, it played an important role in the social world. To an extent, a decision not to engage
in this normative activity could lead to exclusion from the boarder youth scene. Most of the
university students who consume alcohol are teenagers or in the early adolescent stage.

The inhabitation of student alcoholism is not new to most of the universities and state
colleges in the Philippines. Alcoholism is a growing concern in the culture of social life of this
country. Alongside with this case are lots of jeopardizes, consequences, risks, and violations that
occurs which seriously needs the deep concern of the parents, different health organizations, law
enforcing officers, and the government, etc.

This research determines the impact of alcoholism on students’ academic performance in

Jose Rizal Memorial State University, Dipolog Campus. Alcohol (and we are referring here to
beverage alcohol, also known as ethanol or ethyl alcohol) is a substance that acts on the central
nervous system. Therefore, the site of action of alcohol in the body is the brain. It depresses the
activity of certain functions of the brain. As such, alcohol is classified as a central nervous
system depressant.

Comparing young people today with previous generations reveals that there has been
little change in the proportion who consume alcohol or in the average volume consumed by
youngsters (Department of Health, 2005) Smith and Foxcroft). In fact, young people’s brains
keep developing well in their 20’s. Alcohol can alter this development, potentially affecting both
brain structure and function. This may cause cognitive or learning problems and/or make the
brain more prone to alcohol dependence. This is especially a risk when people start drinking
young and drinking heavily. Eva Cyhlarova says that over time, heavy drinking interferes the
neurotransmitters in the brain that are needed for good mental health. So while alcohol may help
deal with stress in the short term, in the long run it can contribute to feeling of depression and
anxiety and makes stress harder to deal with. People who drink heavily are more likely to suffer
from health problems.

The university’s academic state of performance in which the focus is in cognitive aspect
is somewhat degrading as what we’ve heard people saying something about it. Could it be that
students’ alcoholism has a great contribution to the status of the university’s academic
performance? In this case, alcoholism plays a great role in the lives of the students who engage
in alcoholic activities. Students’ drinking poses a range of risks and negative consequences and
our main concern is the impact that it brings to their academic performance.

Along many issues regarding college students’ alcoholism, we aim to determine its
effects on their academic performances. We aim to see the differences of our respondents’ grades
before and during they engage in alcohol use. We sought and strive to investigate this situation
for us to formulate better understandings because it would lead us to formulate various intentions
and solutions to minimize the occurrence of this case.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the different effects of students’ alcoholism on the
academic performance in Jose Rizal Memorial State University, Dipolog Campus.

This study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the respondent’s profile in terms of:

1.1 Age;

1.2 Gender;

1.3 Year level?

2. What is the academic performance of the respondents?

3. What are the different effects that are brought by alcoholism towards studensts’ academic
performance?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the academic performance of the respondents and
the different effects of students’ alcoholism?

5. Is there a significant relationship between the different effects of alcoholism and the
respondent’s profile?

Hypotheses of the Study

The following are the hypotheses of the study:

H11: There are negative effects of alcoholism towards students’ academic performance in Jose
Rizal Memorial State University, Dipolog Campus.

H12: There is a significant relationship between alcoholism and students’ academic performance.

Significance of the Study

This study investigates the relationship of alcoholism towards students’ academic

performance. The focus of this educational research is directed towards determining the impact
of student drinking on their participation in various academic affairs within the scope of this
institution. It thrives to enumerate various effects of alcoholism regarding students’ studies. This
study also signifies the correlation of how often the student drinks and what kind of grades and
achievements he/she has.
In conducting this research we reckon that the institution would be the most benefited one
in the fact that they can make this study as reference regarding the alcohol consumption within
the campus. Because the result of the study would be readily available, it will serve as an
additional resource on the incidence of alcohol drinking inside the campus and its effects to the
students.

It’s also beneficial to the parents for they can utilize this study to gain awareness of the
occurrence of alcohol drinking and its effects to the students in the campus where their
sons/daughters are studying.

Thus, this study will also provide basis of information for future researchers who may
have the interest to conduct in depth study on the topic.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The descriptive qualitative study will focus on the alcohol drinking among the students of
Jose Rizal Memorial State University, Dipolog Campus. The respondents are exclusively those
who engage in alcohol drinking for several times during school days (including Saturday,
Sunday and different holidays) within the semester.

The study covered the relationship of alcoholism and students’ academic performance
and its effects to the university’s competency level within and outside the premises of the
