The Woodcutter’s Watch

In a forest far away, lived many animals. Tiger believed he was the king of the forest so
he shook the forest with a roar occasionally. Elephant would trumpet noisily while
Hyena would laugh in a screeching voice. Monkey would chatter nonstop and jump
around all day.

One day, just when the sun was about to set, a loud cry went around. ‘Where’s my
watch?’ howled Monkey. ‘Since when have you started wearing a watch?’ asked
Elephant. ‘Since he stole it from the woodcutter’s house at the edge of the forest,’
laughed Hyena, adding, ’Stealing things doesn’t do any good, Monkey, just in case
you didn’t know!’

Monkey was upset. ‘Finders are keepers which means that whoever finds a thing can keep it,’ he
argued with tears rolling down his plump cheeks. Seeing their friend so sad, the others dropped
whatever they were doing and began to search for the watch but it just couldn’t be found. Finally
at sunset, the search was called off and the exhausted animals went off to sleep.

A surprise awaited Monkey the next morning. Owl sat on the branch next to him
dangling the watch from his right wing. ‘Yippeee! Give me my watch,’ yelled
Monkey and extended his paw for it happily. ‘Really?’ said Owl. ‘Did you not tell
us yesterday that finders are keepers? I found the watch. So it’s mine!’ The other
animals nodded in agreement and Monkey looked worried.

feathers spent most of their time on the banks of the river. Every six months,
the swans would leave a golden feather as a fee for using the river. The
soldiers would collect the feathers and deposit them in the royal treasury.
One day, a homeless bird saw the river. “The water in this river seems so cool.
I will make my home here," thought the bird. As soon as the bird settled down near the river, the
golden swans noticed her. They came shouting and said to the bird, “This river belongs to us. We
pay a golden feather to the King to use this river so you cannot live here."
“I am homeless. I too will pay the rent so please give me shelter," the bird pleaded. “How will you
pay the rent? You do not have golden feathers," said the swans laughing. The humble bird
pleaded many times. But the arrogant and proud swans drove the bird away.
She went to the King and said, “O King! The swans in your river are very
arrogant. I begged for shelter but they said that they had purchased the river
with their golden feathers and wouldn’t let anyone else stay there."
The King was angry with the arrogant swans. All the golden swans were
brought to the King’s court. “Do you think the royal treasury depends upon
your golden feathers? You cannot decide who will live by the river. It belongs to all the animals
and birds of the kingdom. You do not own it. Leave the river at once or you all will be killed!"
shouted the King.
They flew away never to return. The helpful bird built her home near the river and offered shelter

The Foolish Jackal

Sher Singh the lion was the ruler of a forest and all the animals
respected him. One day, a jackal approached him and said, “Your
Majesty, even though you are a king, you have no attendants to wait
upon you so I have come to offer my services. I hope you will make
me your humble servant.”

Sher Singh agreed to take him into his service. He said, “All right, if
you really desire to serve me, you may live in my cave. Your duty will be to look for an animal
that I can hunt. If you see any suitable prey, you should inform me and I will then hunt the animal
and eat its flesh. The left over will be yours”. The jackal accepted the offer and promised to
perform his duties well.

From that day onwards, he had a good life. Every day, he would go out of the cave and look for
some animal. If he spotted one, he would tell his master, who would then kill the animal and eat a
major portion of its flesh. The jackal would eat the leftovers but he was happy because he got his
food without having to toil for it.

Months passed and the jackal grew fat and strong. He started comparing his strength to the lion
and felt that he should lead an independent life. So, he said, “Your Majesty, I have sincerely
served you all these months but now I feel that I should hunt for my own food. Therefore, I have
come here to seek your permission to leave your service.”

The lion realized that his servant had become arrogant. He said, “My dear fellow, I have an even
better idea! Let us change positions. You can just sit and relax whereas I will go out looking for an
animal. You can then kill the animal and eat your share. I will eat the leftovers.” The jackal
thought it was an excellent plan.

Next day, the lion sighted an elephant and came running to the jackal. He said, “Sir, please kill it
so that you and I can feast on it.”The jackal went out and proudly climbed up a rock. From that
height, he jumped onto the sleeping elephant. The elephant woke up and got really angry at being
