Wuy 1.43 KN/M

The document calculates design load combinations and bending moments for a structural member. It then calculates the bending capacity of the member (ΦbMpx and ΦbMpy) and verifies that the calculated bending moments are less than the bending capacity, indicating the member is safe. It also lists bar forces calculated from a roof truss analysis to design the top, bottom and web members using L50x50x5 sections.

Design Load Combination

Wuy = 1.2 DL + 1.6 LL+ 0.5W

= 1.2 (0.2424 kN/m) + 1.6 (0.75 kN/m) + 0.5(-0.13 kN/m)

Wuy =1.43 kN/m

Wux = 1.2 DL + 1.6 LL

= 1.2 (0.07kN/m) + 1.6 (0.22 kN/m) + 0.5(-0.42 kN/m)

Wuy =0.23 kN/m

(0.23𝑘𝑁/𝑚)(5𝑚)2 )
𝑀𝑢𝑥 = 8

Mux = 0.72 kN.m

Maximum Moment about Y- axis

𝑀𝑢𝑦 = 8

(1.43 𝑘𝑁/𝑚)(5𝑚)2 )
𝑀𝑢𝑦 = 8

Muy = 1.12 kN.m

Compute for ΦbMpx:

ΦbMpx = (0.90) (248 x) (45 x 103 mm3)

ΦbMpx = 10.044 kN-m

Compute for ΦbMpx:

Since the load is applied at the top flange, use only half of the capacity to
account for torsional effects.

ΦbMpx = (0.90) (248MPa) (3.50 x 10-5 m3)

ΦbMpy = 7.812 kN-m

Compute for ΦbMpy:

Since the load is applied at the top flange, use only half of the capacity to
account for torsional effects.

ΦbMpy = (0.90) (248MPa) (4.40x 10-5 m3)

ΦbMpy = 4.91 kN-m

Using expression:

Mux/ ΦbMpx + Muy /ΦbMpy < 1.0

0.72𝑘𝑁.𝑚 1.12𝑘𝑁.𝑚
+ = 0.32 < 1.0 − 𝑺𝑨𝑭𝑬
7.812 𝑘𝑁.𝑚 4.91𝑘𝑁.𝑚
