Assignment: Problem No. 1

This document contains instructions for an assignment with 3 electrical engineering problems to solve involving power factor correction. Students are asked to scan and submit their written solutions by March 17, 2018 at 12:00NN. Problem 1 involves determining real power, original reactive power, and power factor given new power factor and apparent power values. Problem 2 involves circuit calculations given supply voltage, active power, and power factor. Problem 3 involves parallel loads and power factor correction with a capacitor.

Problem No. 1
The power factor of a certain inductive load is improved to 0.92 leading with the addition of a 50 kVAR
bank of Capacitors. If the resulting supply apparent power is 200 kVA, determine:
a. The active/real power
b. The reactive power before power factor correction
c. The power factor before correction.

Problem No. 2
The network shown in Figure below has a total active power of 2253 W. Assuming that the voltage
supply has an angle of zero degree. Determine:
a. The supply current
b. The apparent power
c. The reactive power
d. The circuit power factor
e. The capacitance of the capacitor to be connected in parallel with the network to improve the
power factor to 0.90 lagging, if the supply frequency is 50 Hz.

Problem No. 3
The two loads in the circuit shown in Figure below can be described as follows: Load 1 absorbs an
average power of 8kW at a leading power factor of 0.8. Load 2 absorbs 20kVA at a lagging power factor
of 0.6.
a. Determine the power factor of the two loads in parallel.
b. Determine the apparent power required to supply the loads, the magnitude of the current, Is,
and the average power loss in the transmission line.
c. Given that the frequency of the source is 60Hz, compute the value of the capacitor that would
Correct the power factor to 1 if placed in parallel with the two loads. Recompute the values in
(b) for the load with the corrected power factor.
