1. Dial gauges:
a) A dial gauge can be used to measure three common clearances. These are:
Run out of rotating parts
End play in shaft
Gear backlash
b) Identify the following components of a dial gauge:
Lock screw
.01mm scale 1 mm scale
spindle
2. Using measuring equipment from your workshop, your teacher/supervisor will check your
understanding of measuring practices by observing you complete the following measuring
tasks:
a) You will be provided with a crankshaft to measure. Using a micrometer, measure the
crankshaft journals as shown in the diagram below:
Journal 2: 54.99mm
Journal 3: 54.99mm
Journal 8: 49.84mm
Journal 9: 49.84mm

b) Measure the gap of three spark plugs that will be provided by your teacher or supervisor. Write
the measurements obtained of each spark plug below:
A B C
BKR5EYA, Gap= .57 BKR5EYA, Gap= .40 BKR5EYA, Gap= .95
mm mm mm
c) Select a car tyre and measure the tread depth as shown below:
Outer center inner
Tread depth: Outer: 6.21mm
Center: 5.75mm
Inner: 5.26mm
d) You will be provided with three valve springs and are required to measure the height of each
spring. Using a square, measure the height of the three valve springs and record your answers
below:
Valve spring 1: 5.3mm
Valve spring 2: 5.3mm
Valve spring 3: 4.5mm

e) Using the same valve springs that were measured in the previous task, now measure the height
of the springs using a Vernier caliper. Record your answers below:
Valve spring 1: 50.29mm
Valve spring 2: 50.29mm
Valve spring 3: 43.55mm
f) Were there any differences in the recorded valve spring heights when using the ruler and a
Vernier caliper?
Yes, there is difference in the recorded valve spring heights when using the ruler and a Vernier
caliper.
I believe that because Vernier gives more accurate and precise value after measurement than the
ruler.
g) Which is the most accurate measuring tool for this task? Explain why
Vernier is the most accurate measuring tool for this task. Vernier gives best precision value of
measurement. If another alternate is used such as ruler then there may be chance of wrong
measurement.
