1.1 Terminals
DMR is a generic name for the family (Table 1) of mobile satellite terminals. Most
terminals are less than 17 cm in diameter, compact, provide low power consumption and
low cost.
Terminals, with the exception of the OEM models, are self-contained and
environmentally sealed. SkyWave distributes the unpackaged DMR-800 OEM models
through Solution Providers who package it in their own mechanical enclosure (refer to
Section 3).
Most terminal models include an omni-directional antenna, satellite transceiver (modem),
GPS (optional), programmable microcontroller, and several I/O (input/output) feeds
capable of monitoring and controlling external sensors and devices. Each model is
suitable for both mobile and fixed installations.
The DMR is suitable for a wide range of application requirements. Its built-in
programmability allows it to work as a stand-alone data-messaging terminal, with built-in
I/O data collection and processing capabilities. Its script program is configurable either
locally through the RS232 user data port, or remotely over the satellite, so that modifying
the configuration of an individual terminal in the field is possible without requiring a visit
by a technician.

1 T10, Version 03
DMR-800 - Installation and Hardware Guide

Feature-rich Software Tools make the scripting easy, and shorten the script design and
testing time. SkyWave also provides consulting services to Solution Providers to help
program the DMR and get customer applications running quickly [T9].

• 25 mm hole punch or drill bit (bottom mount connector version only)
• Screwdriver
• Socket wrench set

2.2.4 Inmarsat Serial Number (ISN)

The terminal’s Inmarsat serial number (a hexadecimal number beginning with DCC) is
located on the side of the box under the barcode (Figure 12), on the bottom of the
terminal and electronically inside the transceiver.
1. Record the terminal’s ISN, required for terminal activation, prior to installing the
terminal.
Figure 12 Example of a Terminal’s Inmarsat Serial Number

2.3 Determining the Mounting Location

Before installing the DMR, consider the important guidelines provided below.
General mounting guidelines apply to all terminals including OEM models.
CAUTION Most users install the DMR terminals on a vehicle. It is very
important for installers to install the terminals in a safe and
secure way to avoid danger or damage to persons or property.
CAUTION DMR-800 terminals use satellite radio connections. Do not rely
solely on the DMR-800 for emergency (SOS) calls because these
connections are not guaranteed at all times and under all
conditions.
• Mount the terminal where it has a clear view of the Inmarsat satellite. For a mobile
installation, this means at the highest point on the vehicle or vessel where it has a
clear view of the sky in all directions.
• Mount the terminal so that the Inmarsat satellite is within α degrees of the mounting
surface, α = 0 to 90 degrees for DMR-800D/C1D2/OEM, and -20 to 90 degrees for
DMR-800L.
Make sure that the line of sight is clear of obstructions. Use the following guidelines:

8 T10, Version 03
DMR-800 - Installation and Hardware Guide

Height of Min. Terminal Mounting DMR-800L

Obstruction Distance from Obstruction Min. Terminal Mounting
(D, C1D2, OEM) Distance from Obstruction
0.5 m 5m 2m
0.4 m 4.5 m -
0.3 m 3.5 m -
0.2 m 2m -
• Mount the terminal on a flat surface for mobile installations such that the elevation
angle does not change with rotation.
Note: For fixed installations, the terminal can be pointed at the Inmarsat satellite to
improve performance. This is not necessary for DMR-800L terminals. Contact
SkyWave Customer Support for details.
• Fasten the terminal securely so that it is not loose and does not move easily.
• Mount the terminal on a solid, stable surface. If necessary, use a mounting bracket
(not supplied) or other suitable support.
• Mount the terminal on a surface that does not get hotter than the maximum operating
temperature (Section 5.6). If the surface may get hotter, mount the terminal with a
thermal barrier between it and the mounting surface.
CAUTION Mount the terminal at least 20 cm (8 in) away from humans.
• Do not mount the terminal close to other electrical equipment due to possible radiated
and/or conducted electromagnetic interference.
• Do not mount the terminal close to radar or other communications antennae. Use the
following guidelines:
> 1 m from VHF/UHF antenna
> 3 m from loop antenna
> 4 m from MF/HF antenna
> 5 m from other satellite antennae
Not within a radar beam
• Do not drill any holes before checking that the terminal’s cables comply with the
bend radius specified by the supplier.
Figure 13 Cable Bend Radius

• Do not mount the terminal where water may build-up or collect.

9 T10, Version 03
DMR-800 - Installation and Hardware Guide

Once you have picked the mounting location, mount the terminal (refer to Section 2.4).

2.4 Mounting the Terminal

CAUTION Painting terminals or antennae may interfere with their
performance.
The terminal will either be bottom connector mounting or side connector mounting
(Figure 14).
The mounting instructions in this document cover terminals mounted with screws (refer
to Section 2.4.1) or with magnets (APPENDIX F).
Note: The Solution Provider is responsible for providing mounting instructions if the
mounting is to be done using tools or configurations that are different from the
ones described in this document.
Note: The installer is responsible for complying with local electrical codes.
Figure 14 Bottom Connector and Side Connector (DMR-800D shown)

If installing a DMR-800D C1D2 in a hazardous environment, refer to APPENDIX C

before mounting the terminal.
CAUTION DMR-800D C1D2 equipped with the RS485 I/O module is not
compatible with any cables used for DMR-200 or non-C1D2
DMR-800 terminals since the pin-outs are different (DMR-800D
C1D2 (Table 7).

2.4.1 Drilling Mounting Holes (optional)

Note: These steps are only needed if you do not require a mounting bracket (provided
by the Solution Provider).
1. Use the drill template (APPENDIX G) to mark the location of the four mounting
holes and the connector hole. The direction of the terminal with a bottom connector is
not important.

10 T10, Version 03
DMR-800 - Installation and Hardware Guide

2. Drill the four mounting holes using the drill with the 5.5 mm bit.
3. Punch or drill the 25 mm hole for the connector (bottom connector mount only).
4. Continue with the steps, below, for Mounting the Terminal.

2.4.2 Mounting the Terminal

1. Apply waterproof sealing compound, such as RTV silicone, to the locations shown in
Figure 15 (bottom connector mount only).
Optional: You can also apply waterproof sealing compound to the drilled mounting
holes before inserting the screws.

3. Squeeze the lubricant into the mating connecter opening until it is full. Some
lubricant will spill out.
4. Attach the female end of the mating connector by gently squeezing the connectors
together.
5. Tighten the cable with hand pressure only. Do not use a wrench.
6. Wipe off any extra lubricant around the connector.
7. Wrap the mating connector with waterproof sealing tape if using the connector in
changing weather conditions.
Note: Remember to leave enough cable for strain relief so as not to introduce any
additional force on the connector or antenna sealing. SkyWave recommends
restraining the cables during installation.

2.5 Applying Power

An external, in-line, fast acting, 2-amp fuse connected in series with the terminal should
protect the DMR-800 D/L/C1D2. If the supply voltage is greater than 18 V, use a 1-amp
fuse. A fast acting fuse is recommended even if using a primary battery (e.g., Alkaline or
Lithium cells).
The minimum recommended wire gauge is 22 AWG. If the power cable length exceeds
4.57 m (15 ft), the input voltage range should be de-rated by 1 volt for every 46 cm
(1.5 ft) increase in length.
If a long cable is used in strong RF environments, it should be shielded for reliable
operation.
Check that the polarity is correct and the voltage source is as specified in Section 5.1.5
before connecting the terminal to an external voltage source. Refer to Section 5.1 for
connector pin-out descriptions and information specific to the DMR-800 OEM terminals.

12 T10, Version 03
DMR-800 - Installation and Hardware Guide

Mate the connectors correctly before applying power, and connect the battery ground
connection at the same time or before applying power. This is especially true when using
the RS232 lines along with power and ground.
After powering on the terminal, the ERR LED (Figure 18) comes on for 5 seconds and
the STAT LED flashes. This means that the DMR is correctly executing its start-up self-
test sequence.
After about 5 seconds, the ERR LED will turn off and the STAT LED continues flashing
at different rates. If the ERR LED remains on, the DMR is not functioning correctly. For
a complete description of the LED operation, refer to [T8].
Note: The DMR-800D C1D2 does not have any LEDs.

3.4 Installing the OEM Terminal/Antenna in the Enclosure

The SP is responsible for providing the enclosure for the DMR-800 OEM terminals.
CAUTION To avoid product performance degradation it is important to
follow the OEM enclosure and installation guidelines outlined in
this document.

3.4.1 Enclosure Guidelines

CAUTION Painting transceivers, antennae, or enclosures may interfere with
their performance.
CAUTION Do not drop the unpackaged antenna since it can be damaged
when not protected by an enclosure.
• The enclosure should be rated IP67 3 or better if designed to be used outside, e.g.,
roof, and rated IP40 or better if designed to be used indoors (e.g., truck cab).
• The enclosure must be transparent to L-Band (1-2 GHz) radio signals.
• Two enclosure materials are recommended and both meet UL 746C (outdoor
suitability) standards:
• Xenoy® Resin 5220U 4. This plastic material offers good chemical resistance and
great impact resistance even at low temperatures.
• Lexan Resin 500R 5. This is a PC (Polycarbonate) plastic material with filler:
glass fiber reinforcement, 10%. It has an optimum combination of excellent
impact strength and flame retardance.

3.5 Determining the Mounting Location

After installing the terminal in the enclosure, review the general mounting guidelines in
Section 2.3 before mounting the terminal.

3.6 Mounting the Terminal

The SP is responsible for providing the mounting instructions.
It is the installer’s responsibility to comply with local electrical codes and acquire any
required certifications.
SkyWave recommends using a molded, waterproof, IP67, cable to attach the CON000341
receptacle assembly.

3.7 Mounting the Antenna

The DMR-800S OEM antenna cable is critical for the terminal's performance. A low-loss
coaxial cable like LMR195 is recommended.
Maximum length of the LMR195 between the DMR-800S OEM transceiver and antenna
is 10 m. The bend radius for the LMR195 is 12.7 mm.

19 T10, Version 03
DMR-800 - Installation and Hardware Guide

3.7.1 SkyWave Packaged Satellite/GPS Antenna Mounting Guidelines

CAUTION Mount the satellite/GPS antenna at least 20 cm (8 in) away from
humans.
• Mount the satellite/GPS antenna where it can reach the transceiver unit and has a
clear view of the Inmarsat satellite. For a mobile installation, this means at the
highest point on the vehicle or vessel where it has a clear view in all directions.
• Do not drill any holes before checking that you have room for the bend radius of
the LMR195-PVC cable. For reliable operation, do not go below a bend radius of
12.7 mm. Measure the bend radius of the cable as below:
Figure 24 Cable Bend Radius

Bend

Correct

• Mount on a flat surface for maximum adhesion (magnetic mount antenna only).
• Mount on a surface that is free from dirt, grime, water and grease to avoid
damaging the mounting surface or the vehicle’s paint.
• Mount so that the cable end faces the rear of the vehicle.
CAUTION Carefully consider the roof mounting location if passing
branches may knock the magnetic antenna off the roof.
• Mount the antenna so that the Inmarsat satellite is within 0 to 90 degrees (look
angle) of the mounting surface. Make sure that the line of sight is clear of
obstructions. Use the following guidelines:
Table 2 Elevation Angle Guidelines
Height of Obstruction Min. Antenna Mounting
Distance from Obstruction
0.5 m 5m
0.4 m 4.5 m
0.3 m 3.5 m
0.2 m 2m

3.7.2 Drill Mount the SkyWave Packaged Satellite/GPS Antenna

1. Find a location for the satellite/GPS antenna following the guidelines provided in
Section 3.7.1.

20 T10, Version 03
DMR-800 - Installation and Hardware Guide

2. Use the drill template (APPENDIX H) to mark the location of the mounting holes.
For a bottom connector antenna you will also need to drill a hole for the antenna
cable.
CAUTION Only drill the antenna cable hole if installing a bottom
connector antenna.
CAUTION Remember to leave enough cable for strain relief so as not to
introduce any additional force on the connector or antenna
sealing. SkyWave recommends restraining the cables during
installation.
CAUTION Locate the mounting screw away from the gore vent
(Figure 25). Do not block the vent with silicone.

3. Drill the mounting holes using the drill.

4. Apply waterproof sealing compound, such as RTV silicone, around the drill holes so
water does not seep into the unit. Remember not to block the gore vent with silicone.
5. Secure the antenna in place with screws or bolts depending on the mounting surface.

3.8 Applying Power

An external, fast acting, 2-amp fuse connected in series with the terminal should protect
the DMR-800 OEM. If the supply voltage is greater than 18 V, then use a 1-amp fuse. A
fast acting fuse is recommended even if using a primary battery (e.g., Alkaline or Lithium
cells).
The minimum recommended wire gauge is 22 AWG. If the power cable length exceeds
4.57 m (15 ft.), the input voltage range should be de-rated by 1 volt for every 46 cm
(1.5 ft.) increase in length. If a long cable is used, it should be shielded for reliable
operation.
Check that the polarity is correct and the voltage source is as specified in Section 5.1.2
before connecting the terminal to an external voltage source. Always ensure that the
connectors mate properly before power is applied.

4 DMR Cable Assembly Instructions

This section provides the information necessary for the Solution Provider to assemble
DMR power/interface cables for the end-user.
CAUTION Pay attention to the assembly and installation steps to protect the
connector pins operation of the terminal.

4.1 Mating connector Part Number

The SkyWave part numbers for the mating connector are
DMR-800D, L, C1D2 SKY CON000371
DMR-800D OEM and S OEM SKY CON000341, SKY CON001053 (un-shrouded)

4.2 Cable Selection

The following guidelines are for designing cables used to connect the DMR with a
remote power source, remote RS232 data source/sink, and remote I/O devices.
Several factors determine the maximum allowable length of the cable:
• Conductor wire gauge(s)
• Power supply voltage and current
• Differential DC voltage between the remote power supply ground and DMR ground
• If the user’s application uses the DMR’s available I/O lines, it is important to make
sure that the differential DC voltage between the DMR ground and the power supply
ground does not exceed approximately 200 mV. Differential voltages higher than this
may cause incorrect I/O operation.
• If the power cable length exceeds 4.57 m (15 ft.), the input voltage range should be
de-rated by 1 volt for every 46 cm (1.5 ft.) increase in length. Make sure the de-rated
input voltage meets the DMR-800 minimum input specification of 9 V.
• A voltage drop in the power supply return conductor causes this differential voltage
and is greatest when the DMR is in transmit mode.
• Table 3 shows the recommended wire gauge for the return conductor for different
power supply voltages and different cable lengths.
Table 3 Recommended Wire Gauge for Power Supply Return Conductor
Supply Voltage Cable Length Cable Length Cable Length Cable Length
V DC 0-5 meters 10 meters 20 meters 30 meters
12 20 AWG 2 x 20 AWG 2 x 18 AWG N/A
15 20 AWG 2 x 20 AWG 2 x 18 AWG 2 x 18 AWG
18 20 AWG 20 AWG 2 x 20 AWG 2 x 18 AWG
24 20 AWG 20 AWG 2 x 20 AWG 2 x 18AWG
• If the customer's application does not use the DMR-800’s available I/O lines, blunt
cut the ends.

23 T10, Version 03
DMR-800 - Installation and Hardware Guide

• Main power conductors should follow the recommended wire gauge shown in
Table 3. All other ground conductors should be 20 AWG.
• Shield and ground cables used for power, RS232 and I/O lines if the terminals will
operate in strong RF environments.
• Make sure the cable’s outside jacket fits the mating connector shell. Recommended
maximum outside diameter is 6.35 mm (0.25 in.).

4.3 Tools
• Knife
• Wire stripper
• Fine-tip soldering iron
• Solder
Figure 26 Coaxial Mini-con-x Series Cable Connector Assembly

4.4 Cable Assembly Steps

For DMR-800 D/L/C1D2
1. Select a cable made of a material suitable for the terminal’s environment and cut it to
the required length.
2. Install a back shell on the cable (Figure 26).
3. Select the correct size grommet and install it on the cable.
The connector comes with three grommets and three different sizes of holes. Pick the
grommet, which gives a tight fit on the cable. Make sure that the end of the grommet
that has the larger inner diameter is facing toward the connector body. Throw away
the other two grommets.
4. Install a coupling ring (Figure 26).

24 T10, Version 03
DMR-800 - Installation and Hardware Guide

5. Cut and remove the outer jacket of the cable, 11 mm (0.438 in.) from the end
(Figure 26).
6. Be careful not to cut the insulation on the wires.
7. Remove any foil shield.
8. Use a wire stripper to remove 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) of insulation from the wires
(Figure 26).
9. Use a soldering iron, solder, and tin wires to solder into the connector pins. The
connector pin-out are found in Section 5.1.
10. Push the coupling ring onto the connector body (Figure 26).
11. Slide the grommet to cover the wires.
12. Slide the back shell over the connector body and twist lock in place.
13. Install an O-ring on the front of the connector body.

Note: If a digital input is left floating, reading a non-inverting digital input will
return logic high due to an internal weak pull-up (~100 kohm). For extremely
long wire, an external strong pull-up (1 kohm) may be required to compensate
for the voltage drop across the wire.
Note: Use an external pull-down if the digital input I/O line is configured to read a
switch to battery.
Note: Ensure the output impedance of the analog voltage source is <1 kohm
Note: The analog inputs are measured with respect to the terminal ground. Using a
short terminal power supply and ground wire connection is recommended as
any voltage drop on the ground reference affects the accuracy of the analog
input. The voltage drop is most pronounced during the transmission as the
current draw is largest at that time.

RS485 I/O Module Interface

• DMR-800D C1D2 with RS485 I/O module supports the Modbus RTU protocol.
• The RS485 I/O module supports a 2-wire twisted pair interface
• The common ground wire is tied to all slave devices.
• RS485 I/O module transceiver devices may go into thermal shut-down in the event of
a major short circuit condition. The transceiver device will re-enable once the fault is
cleared and the device’s temperature drops by 15°C.

RS232 Interface
• On power-up, the state of the digital output is undefined until the terminal self-check
sequence is complete. If the DMR-800’s transceiver chip has a disabled transmitter,
this will prevent the DMR from transmitting on the RS232 Tx user data port.
• When a voltage greater than 0.5 V, for at least 0.1 second, is present on the RS232
Rx Data input port, this generates an external interrupt. Refer to [T8] for information
on power management modes.

APPENDIX F Clip Magnet Installation

If you have a clip magnet kit (Figure 32) for mounting the DMR terminal to a metal
surface, follow the procedure below. Magnets are inserted onto the four plastic tabs on
the terminal's base plate.
CAUTION Remember to keep the magnets away from electronic devices like
a Palm (PDA) or PC and away from other information stored
magnetically (e.g., bank cards).
Figure 32 Clip Magnet Kit and Base Plate Plastic Tabs

Plastic
Tabs
Protective
Metal Disk

1. Remove the protective metal disks from the clip magnets. These disks are not
required for installation.
2. Clip one of the magnets onto a plastic tab, on the terminal's base plate, by lifting a
corner of the magnet's clip (Figure 33A).
CAUTION Before inserting the magnets, if the base plate is tightly screwed
to the terminal, loosen the screws just enough so the magnet can
slide down the plastic tab. Remember to tighten the screws after
the magnets have been attached so the terminal does not detach
from the base plate once it is mounted on a metal surface.
3. Push the magnet all the way down the plastic tab (Figure 33B).
