Field Work No. 3 Taping On Sloping Ground: Mapúa Institute of Technology

This document summarizes a fieldwork assignment measuring distances on a sloping surface. It includes an introduction, final data sheet with measurements of distances A through E and calculations to determine the horizontal distance (HD) and vertical distance (VD) using Pythagorean theorem. The conclusion discusses the accuracy of measurements and effectiveness of Pythagorean theorem for this task. Recommendations suggest choosing an open field with fewer distractions and considering using similar triangles technique as an alternative method.

FINAL DATA SHEET

A = 4.93m D = 4.93m
B = 4.84m E = 3.21m
C = 4.98m SD = 23.5m

HD = A + B + C + D + E
= 4.93m + 4.84m + 4.98m + 4.93m + 3.21m
= 22.89m

SOLVE FOR VD USING PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM:

𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 = 𝑐 2

VD = √(SD2 + HD2)
= √(23.5m)2 – (22.89m)2
= 5.32m
CONCLUSION

One of the basic techniques that we must learn in Surveying is

getting the length of a side of a particular lot or surfaces. The distances that
we are going to measure must be accurate for us to also have an accurate
result of what we are going to need. In this field work, most of the groups
have the same whole number answers but differ from in each other in the
decimal places. Nevertheless, we were all still correct.

The most accurate formula for this fieldwork is the Pythagorean

theorem. The ramp forms a perpendicularly straight height distance from
the ground to the top of the ramp. By acquiring the horizontal distance and
sloping distance of the ramp, Pythagorean theorem gave us the most
accurate measurement of the height of the ramp.

Pythagorean theorem is the best equation to be used in this kind of

situation. Other formulas/equations may also be used until they have the
same answers.

RECOMMENDATION

The field or that you should choose must be a place with less
distractions like trees, etc. It is hard to see if the measuring tape is equally
aligned or have the same elevation from one rod to another if there is a tree
or a thing that gets in the way. Another thing is that, similar triangles
technique can be used in this field work just make sure that the measuring
tape will touch the ground the first rise over run that you will make and also
you must get the elevation of the measuring tape for the similar triangles
method to work perfectly.
