Skill Practices:

Defence

4 corners investigation
1. This drill focuses on a student’s ability to
move around the court and get underneath
the ball
2. 4 areas are marked, one on each corner of
the receiver’s side
3. A feeder will then pass or throw the ball
across the net and try to hit these 4 zones
whilst the hitter tries to knock it away
4. The student does this for 1 minute, returning
the ball to the feeder as often as possible
5. After 1 minute the two students swap roles and the feeder must attempt to stop
more balls getting into the zones than their partner
6. The drill can be changed in difficulty by how hard the feeder throws or passes the
balls toward the targets

Last man standing

1. 4 students start on each side of the net,
the teacher will then feed the ball to the
setter of one team
2. the setter will set it for one of the 3
hitters, if a hitter misses a shot then they
are eliminated and another student
takes their position
3. after 10 feeds, the hitters rotate with the
setters to give them a turn
4. The last student to not have been knocked out is the winner
5. This drill is great for both setting and hitting practice

2 on the go
1. 4 students set up in a rectangle shape with
two balls
2. 2 balls are hit simultaneously so that the
ball will go down the line, diagonal, down
the line and diagonal again, back to the
student who started
3. Students can catch, throw and set the ball
each time they receive it to maximise their
control over the ball
4. Students must maintain a gap between the
balls so that they are ready for the next ball
5. Students should count how many rounds they can keep both balls in the air
