Task Cards

The document provides instructions for three science experiments: 1) The bead and spoon experiment where beads are placed in butter on spoons in a bowl of hot water to observe what happens over 5-10 minutes. 2) The heat experiment where food coloring is added to jars of room temperature, cold, and hot water to observe how it behaves and spreads in each jar over time. 3) The color and water experiment where containers of the same temperature water are covered with paper and placed in sunlight to observe how the water temperature changes after an hour, relating it to predictions.

Bead & Spoon Experiment

Instructions
1. Begin by positioning 3 spoons in a small glass bowl.
2. Place a small bit of butter at the top of each spoon.
3. Place a bead in each portion of butter.
4. Write your prediction on what will happen after
pouring hot water into the bowl.
5. Carefully pour hot water into the bowl until it is almost
completely full. Be careful not to allow the spoons to
fall into the bowl.
6. Watch carefully to see what happens to the beads.
Note: You will likely need to watch the experiment for
5-10 minutes before anything happens.

Conducting Heat Experiment

Instructions
1. Fill the jar labeled ‘Room Temperature’ 3/4 of the way with water
from the tap (to the line marked on the jar).
2. Fill the jar labeled ‘Cold Water’ 3/4 of the way with cold tap water
(from the tap). Add ice to the jar to cool the water. Remove the ice
from the jar once the water has cooled down.
3. Ask the educator to fill your ‘Hot Water’ jar 3/4 of the way with hot
water.
4. Add three drops of food colouring to each of the jars and observe
what happens over time.
Key Questions
• What happens to the drop of food colouring?
• Does the food colouring behave the same in each of the jars? Why or
why not?
• What can you say about the relationship between heat and the
movement of molecules? (Extension)
Colour & Water Experiment
Instructions
1. Fill 4 containers with water. Be sure the temperature
of the water is the same. What is their starting
temperature?
2. Cover each container with a piece of paper.
3. Place the containers in direct sunlight or under a
lamp.
4. Write your prediction on your planners.
5. Wait about an hour and then measure the water
temperature. (We will be completing this part of
the experiment after lunch time)
