Short Column Design Procedure Guide

The document provides design guidelines for a short reinforced concrete column with a square cross-section. It specifies the given parameters such as a 1m foundation depth, 250kPa permissible soil pressure, and f'c and fsy strengths of 40MPa and 500MPa. It then outlines the design procedure of assuming an initial size and reinforcement, checking the strength requirement of N=0.4fcuAc + 0.75Ascfy, and determining the required longitudinal bar area Asc and link requirements. The example calculation determines a 300x300mm column size with 4 #32 bars satisfies the 2700kN load capacity considering 1.2G+1.5Q loads.

DESIGN OF SHORT COLUMN

Given Data :
Square Column Section
Foundation 1.0 m below ground level
Permissible Soil - bearing pressure = 250 Kpa
Condition to be satisfied for Braced short column is that:
Slenderness ratio, Le/r <= 25
Note : Short columns bending moments due to
slenderness can be taken as zero.
Concrete Strength ,f'c = 40 Mpa
Reinforcement strength ,fsy = 500 Mpa
Reinforcement size ( 10 mm <= bar dia <= 40 mm)
Design Procedure :
Step 1 : Assume an initial size of column, concrete
strength and reinforcement.
CODAL PROVISION :
While As 3600 permits the use of 200 mm * 200 mm
Columns , a minimum dimension ( for square,
rectangular or circular columns ) of 250 mm is
recommended.
So take For f'c = 40 Mpa, size should be 300 mm * 300
mm ( chart 6.1 )

Concrete Strength , f'c = 40 Mpa

Reinforcement ,fsy = 500 Mpa
Step 2 : Strength Design
Concrete design stress = 0.67 fcu / 1.5 = 0.45 fcu
Reinforcement design stress = fy / 1.15 = 0.87 fy

N = Fc + Fs
= 0.45 fcu Ac + 0.87 fy Asc
Therefore, Load capacity of column can be found as:
N = 0.4 fcu Ac + 0.75 Asc fy
Assume from code provision G = 1000 KN
Q = 1000 KN. [ codal
provision As 3600 -2009]
As we know column is axially loaded, then the load
capacity is :
N = 0.4 fcu Ac + 0.75 fy Asc

Total ultimate load (N)

Load combination : 1.2 G + 1.5 Q
= 1.2 * 1000 + 1.5 * 1000
= 1200 +1500
= 2700 KN
Put the above value of N in the load capacity equation ,
we get
2700 * 1000 = 0.4 *40 * (350² - Asc) + 0.75 * 500 Ac
Asc = 2678 mm²
In the code As 3600 Table [ codal provision ACI ] provide
4H32.
Asc = 3660 mm²

CODAL PROVISION :
The minimum area of reinforcement , Asc required by
As 3600 is 1% of the gross concrete area. Generally the
reinforcement ratio should be kept below 2.5% for
economy and ease of splicing. AS 3600 permits a
maximum area of reinforcement of 4% and this implies
a maximum of 8 % at lap.
Now the we need to find the diameter of one link
,which is according to the codal provision As 3600 -2009
can be taken as one - fourth of the largest diameter of
the longitudinal bar.
1/4 * 40 = 10 mm
It should not be less then 10 mm diameter.
The spacing of the links is lesser of :
a) 12 * the dia. of smallest longitudinal of bar, i.e
12 *40 = 480(or)
b) the smallest c/s dimension of the column (300 mm )
Hence provide H10 links at 300 mm centres.
