1) Dial-type electric meters have four or five clock-like faces that must be read from right to left. Record the lowest number if the pointer falls between two numbers. 2) If the pointer is directly on a number, look at the dial to the right to determine if you record the higher or lower number. 3) To calculate usage, read the numbers from left to right and subtract the previous reading from the current reading.

• If the pointer is between two numbers, record the lowest


number (if it’s between 9 and 0, you should record 9).
• In the example above, you should record 1.

• If the pointer is directly on a number, look at the dial to


the right. If the pointer is between 9 and 0, record the
smaller number. If it’s between 0 and 1, record the larger
number.
• For the dials above, you have a 3 and a 9 (in fact, it
means a 39 almost becoming a 40, but still a 39).
