Diarrhea

1. Definition
Diarrhea is liquid bowel movements. This often happens to children, especially those aged 6
months to 2 years. More common in babies under 6 months of age who get cow's milk or formula milk.
Frequent, but normal bowel movements are not diarrhea. The number of normal bowel movements per
day varies depending on food and age of the child. In some countries diarrhea is defined as liquid bowel
movements three or more times in 24 hours.

2. Signs and Symptoms of Diarrhea


a. Severe dehydration diarrhea
1) Letargis or unconscious
2) Concave eyes
3) Can not drink or lazy to drink
4) Pinch the belly skin very slowly (more than 2 seconds)
b. Mild / moderate dehydration diarrhea
1) Restless, fussy / irritable
2) Concave eyes
3) Thirst, drink with gusto
4) Pinch the belly skin slowly again
c. Diarrhea without dehydration
Not enough signs to be classified as severe or mild / moderate dehydration diarrhea
d. Severe persistent diarrhea
There is dehydration
e. Persistent diarrhea
Without dehydration
f. Dysentery
There is blood in the stool

3. How to prevent diarrhea


Diarrhea is generally transmitted through 4 F, namely Food, Feces, Fly and Finger. Therefore
diarrhea can be prevented by maintaining personal and environmental hygiene. The way to prevent
diarrhea can be done by:
a. Wash your hands with soap properly at five important times, namely:
1) before eating
2) after defecation
3) before handling the baby
4) after tricking the child
5) before preparing food;
b. Drinking healthy drinking water, or treated water, among others, by boiling, heating with sunlight
or chlorination
c. Good waste management so that food is not contaminated by insects (flies, cockroaches, fleas,
cockroaches, etc.)
d. Defecate and defecate in its place (lavatory, toilet)

4. How to treat diarrhea


a. If the child is exclusively breastfed, the child should be breastfed more often than usual
b. If the child is not exclusively breastfed, give one or more of the following fluids:
1) ORS solution
2) Household liquids such as soup broth, etc.
3) Clean water
c. Give zinc supplements. Zinc supplements will speed the cessation of diarrhea and the child's
condition improves quickly.
d. Rehydration therapy using intravenous fluids or using orogastric tubes is only recommended in
children with severe dehydration.
e. Give oral antibiotics that are recommended for Shigella in your area to treat the minister
