Introduction
The falling head permeability test is a common laboratory testing method used to determine the
permeability of fine grained soil with intermediate and low permeability such as silts and clays.
This testing method can be applied to an undisturbed sample.
k = aL ln [h1/h2]
A[t2-t1]
where:
A = inside cross sectional area of the sample
a = inside cross sectional area of the standing pipe
h1 =initial height of the standpipe
h2 =final height of the standpipe
t1 =initial time before the start of the test
t2 =final time at the end of the test
Objectives:
To determine the coefficient of permeability or hydraulic conductivity of fine grained soils with
intermediate and low permeability such as silts and clays.
Apparatus:
1) Clean water is filled in the steel water tank until the water flows out from
overflow.
2) A hose is used to connect the water outlet from the water tank to the cell
valve to allow water flowing freely into the cell, while the water in the steel tank flow
into the sample from the cell bottom for complete saturation.
4) The glass tube with diameter of 4mm is filled with water until a few centimetre
above fixed level h1 (700mm)
5) The water in the steel tank is top up until it overflow (sample in the cell in
saturated state).
6) The valve of the glass tube is opened, the water will flow into the tank then out from
the tank.
7) At the same time, digital stopwatch is prepared and to record the rate of
flow starting the water in the glass tube passing the level h1 and stop at
h2 (200mm)
8) The measuring process is measured for remaining different sizes of manometer tubes.
