4)
When we look at School A’s scores, there is no variance or standard deviation as the data from
school A does not vary and all the scores are identical to one another.

When we look at School B’s scores, there is a variance of 2 with a standard deviation of 1.414, the
scores are not identical to each other like in School A’s scores thus the greater variance and
standard deviation.

When we look at School C’s scores, there is a variance of 8 with a standard deviation of 2.828,
this set of data has the greatest difference when the 5 data values are compared to each other,
thus having the greatest variance and standard deviation in all of the schools

Σ( Xi − x̄) = 40

VARIANCE = 40/5 = 8  STANDARD DEVIATION = 2.828

By increasing each of the score values, the mean of the data increases by 2 from 7 to 9. The
variation and standard deviation however remain the same even with the increase of each score
by 2.

/N
Σ( Xi − x̄) = 40
N = 5  √8
VARIANCE = 40/5 = 8  STANDARD DEVIATION = 2.828

By doubling each of the scores from School B, the mean value of the data increases from 7 to 14.
The square of deviation increases from 10 to 40. With the increase in the square of deviation, the
variance increases from 2 to 8.
The standard deviation increases from 1.414 to 2.828.
