RESEARCH EXPERIENCES
State Key Joint Laboratory of Environment Simulation and Pollution Control, PKU Sep 2016 – Present
Role: Research Assistant; Supervisor: Prof. Mei ZHENG
Project 1: National Natural Science Foundation International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Project, Online
Source Analysis Study: Analysis of Beijing Atmospheric Fine Particles Source Based on Receptor Model
Implemented high-time resolved instruments, including In-situ Gas and Aerosol Composition (IGAC) and Xact
monitoring the water-soluble inorganic ions and trace elements (TEs) in PM2.5, respectively at Peking University in
Beijing for three months.
Compared the performance of IGAC and Xact using corresponding offline filter-based measurement by analyzing
components of 8 ions and 13 TEs.
Compared two PMF (Positive Matrix Factorization) source apportionment results using online and offline monitoring
data respectively, investigating whether PMF source apportionment results would be influenced by different monitoring
methods.
Concluded that most online data have good correlations with offline data. And for PMF results, while most online data
have good correlations with offline data, the details of PMF-source apportionment results still can be influenced by
different monitoring methods.
Project 2: Pathophysiology and intervention study of respiratory injury caused by fine particulate matter, 973 Project
funded by Ministry of science and technology of the PRC (Assistant role)
This panel study designed to assess the short-term respiratory health effects of ambient air pollution in Beijing, China.
60 elder adults who have been diagnosed as COPD and 60 healthy adults were recruited from a community hospital site.
Allocating paper-based survey, contacting study participation, collecting survey, inputting and compile pre-survey data.
Measured lung function for every subjects under the instruction of professional physicians.
Measured the concentration of organic carbon, element carbon and trace elements in PM 2.5 with online OC/EC and Xact
instruments
Completed section of the interim report for this project, mainly assess the quality of online monitoring data
Project 3: AIRLESS, A joint UK-China programme funded by NERC-MRC-NSFC-Newton Fund (Main part of my
Master's dissertation Thesis)
The AIRLESS study is a panel study designed to assess effects of air pollutions on cardiopulmonary disease in urban
(Peking University Site) and peri-urban (Pinggu district) residents in Beijing. Two panel each comprising 120 non-
smoking healthy adults were recruited from the two monitoring sites.
Measured FeNO (fraction of exhaled nitric oxide) using a portable NIOXMINO® and collected EBC (exhaled breath
condensate) using an RTube™ sampling device.
Measured BC (black carbon) concentration and mixing states with Aethalometer and single particle aerosol mass
spectrometer (SPAMS).
Performed analysis using linear regression models investigating associations between BC concentration, size
distribution, mixing states and source apportionment results and health indicators such as cardiovascular index, oxidative
stress, endothelial and lung function.
Investigated if any specific source of PM2.5 (e.g. Traffic source, biomass source, coal-burning source) is more
significantly associated with health outcomes(variation in FeNO, blood pressure, etc.) than others.
State Key Joint Laboratory of Environmental Simulation and Pollution Control, PKU Sep 2014 – Present
Research Assistant, Supervisor: Prof. Jianxin HU and Jianbo ZHANG
State Key R & D Program, Impact of Reactive Organic Compounds on Air Quality and Environmental Benefits (grant
number 2016YFC0202200)
Applied a bottom-up method to construct a historical emissions inventory and the provincial distribution of short-chain
chlorinated paraffin (SCCPs) and decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE) in China based on research in relevant economic
sectors.
Identified major consumer sectors and calculated the annual national emissions inventory of SCCPs and decaBDE
Constructed a provincial distribution of SCCPs and decaBDE to identify high emission areas in China.
Completed a study report concluding that the largest emission source was from metalworking fluids, and SCCPs emissions
were mainly concentrated in the eastern, more economically developed regions, such as Jiangsu Province.
Long term variation of ambient peroxyacyl nitrate concentration and regional transportation
Processed the hourly, daily and monthly monitoring data of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) and other conventional parameters
and revealed the correlation between different parameters by applying linear regression.
Implemented back-propagation (BP) artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple linear regression (MLR) methods to
predict the hourly average PAN concentrations in Beijing, 2014.
Examined the relationships between concentrations of PAN and other pollutants (e.g., ozone [O3] and PM2.5) during a
winter haze episode.
Concluded that the continuous cumulative increase in PAN concentrations was the result of a combination of
photochemical production during the daytime and production based on free radical chemical reactions during the nighttime.
School of Public Health, PKU Jul 2015 – Aug 2016
Research Assistant, Supervisor: Prof. Xiaochuan PAN and Guoxing LI
National Natural Science Foundation of China, Study on the effect of fine particle exposure level on acute death in
population based on satellite remote sensing data (Grant no. 81372950). (Bachelor’s dissertation Thesis)
Projected temperature-related mortality attributed by cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Beijing during 2050 and 2070.
Applied 19 global circulation models (GCMs), 3 representative concentration pathways (RCPs), 3 socioeconomic
pathways, together with generalized linear models and distributed lag non-linear models to project future temperature-
related CVD mortality.
Based on our study results, temperature-related CVD mortality rate in Beijing is projected to increase by 3.5–10.2% under
different RCP scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP8.5) compared with that during the baseline period (2007-2009). The
annual rate of increase in temperature-related CVD deaths was up to fivefold greater than that under no-population-change
scenarios and adaptation to climate change may enhance rather than ameliorate the health effect of climate change.
