User Manual 1 Safety Precautions

 When installing or removing power cables, ensure that the corresponding circuits are
disconnected to prevent electric arcs or sparks.
 If AC input power cables need to be routed from the top, bend the cables in a U shape
outside the cabinet and then route them into the cabinet.
 Store cables for at least 24 hours at room temperature before laying out them if they were
previously stored at sub-0ºC.
 Perform routine maintenance as described in this manual; replace faulty components at
the earliest.

1.2 Electrical Safety

Grounding Requirements
 When installing a device, install the ground cable first. When uninstalling a device,
remove the ground cable last.
 Before operating a device, ensure that the device is properly grounded. Ensure that the
ground cable is installed securely (the ground resistance should be less than 0.1 ohm).
Inappropriate grounding may cause device damage and personal injury.

AC and DC Power

 The power system is powered by high-voltage power sources. Direct or indirect contact
(through damp objects) with high-voltage power sources may result in serious injury or
death.
 Non-standard and improper operations may result in fire or electric shocks.
 Before making electrical connections, turn off the protection switch on the upstream
device to cut the power supply.
 Before connecting the AC power supply, ensure that electrical connections are complete.

ESD
 To prevent electrostatic-sensitive components from being damaged by static from human
bodies, wear a grounded electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap or ESD gloves when
touching circuit boards.
 When holding a board, hold its edge without touching any components, especially chips.
 Package boards with ESD packaging materials before storing or transporting them.

Liquid Prevention
 Do not place the product in areas prone to water leakage, such as near air conditioner

User Manual 1 Safety Precautions

 If any liquid is detected inside the product, immediately disconnect the power supply and
contact the administrator.

1.3 Lithium Battery Safety

Basic Requirements
 Keep the battery loop disconnected during installation and maintenance.
 Do not charge a battery when the ambient temperature is less than the lower limit for the
operating temperature; otherwise, a short circuit may occur inside the battery.
 Do not throw a lithium battery in fire.
 When maintenance is complete, return the waste lithium battery to the maintenance
office.
 If new batteries are installed during an AC power failure, the batteries may not work
temporarily.
 Install batteries in a dry, clean, and ventilated environment that is free from corrosive
substances such as organic solvents and sources of ignition. Do not expose batteries to
sunlight or water.

Preventing Battery Short Circuit

Battery short circuits will generate high transient currents and release a great deal of energy,
which may cause personal injury.

If conditions permit, disconnect the batteries in use before performing any other operations on
them.

Preventing Battery Overdischarge

After you connect batteries, ensure that the battery fuse is disconnected or the circuit breaker
is OFF before powering on the power system. This prevents battery overdischarge, which
damages batteries.

5.1.2 Storage and Recharging

Storage Requirements
1. Place ESMs according to the signs on the packing case during storage. Do not put ESMs
upside down or sidelong.
2. Stack ESM packing cases by complying with the stacking requirements on the external
package.
3. The storage environment requirements are as follows:
− Ambient temperature: 0–40°C; recommended storage temperature: 20–30°C
− Relative humidity: ≤ 95%
− In a dry clean place with proper ventilation
− In a place that is away from corrosive and organic substances (including gas)
− In a place free from direct sunlight
− At least 2 meters away from heat sources (such as a radiator)
4. The warehouse keeper should collect ESM storage information every month and
periodically report the ESM inventory information to the planning department. The
ESMs that have been stored overdue should be recharged in a timely manner.
5. Any offices or organizations outside China should not store ESMs or communications
equipment configured with ESMs. Prior approval shall be obtained for any requirements
on storing ESMs.
6. ESMs should be delivered based on the "first in, first out" rule.
7. Install ESMs in a dry, clean, and ventilated environment that is free from sources of
strong infrared radiation, organic solvents, and corrosive gases. Do not expose the ESMs
to sunlight or water and keep them far away from sources of ignition.

Conditions for Judging Overdue Storage

It is recommended that the ESM not be stored for a long period. It should be used soon after
being deployed onsite.
The following table lists the ESM storage requirements.

Table 5-2 Storage handling requirements

1. Dispose of bulging ESMs directly irrespective of how long they have been stored.
2. The storage duration (t) starts from the latest charge time on the ESM package. Update the latest
charge time after every charge.
3. If an ESM is qualified after recharge, mark the latest charge time and the next recharge time on the
ESM packing case. The next recharge time is 8 months (stored above 30°C) or 12 months (stored
below 30°C) later than the latest charge time. The total storage duration should not exceed the
warranty period.

Qualification Standards for Recharge

Processing before ESM recharge as follows.
1. Check the ESM appearance.
2. Dispose of bulging ESMs directly.
3. Dispose of damaged or deformed ESMs directly.
4. Dispose of leaking ESMs directly.
5. Use a rubber eraser to clean the surface of the ESM edge connector.
Recharge the ESMs that pass the test. The power system configuration requirements are as
follows.

Table 5-3 Power system configuration requirements

Parameter Specifications

Output voltage 53.5–59.5 V

Output current ≥1A

Charge duration: 2 h ≤ t ≤ 8 h. Check that the CHG indicator on the ESM front panel is steady
on and the RUN indicator is on during the charge; the CHG indicator is off and the RUN
indicator is on after the charge; the ALM indicator is off during and after the charge.
After the charge is full, remove the ESM from the power system before powering off the
power system.

If the ALM indicator is steady on during and after the charge, the ESM has internal faults or
alarms. They are exceptions, and should be reported and analyzed. Under this circumstance, it
is possible that the batteries are not fully charged.

5.1.3 Setting the Backup Time (Td)

Users can set the backup time through 17.2.1.26 AcbGroupSetBackTime in the SNMP.
Battery backup time, which users can configure the alarm severity.
Value range: 0 to 900, units: s.

Issue 01 (2018-01-12) Huawei Proprietary and Confidential 33

ETP48600 Embedded Power
User Manual 5 Operation and Maintenance

The default value is 120.

If the value is 2147483647 (0x7FFFFFFF), it indicates that the value is invalid.
Determine the maximum load power and refer to the following table when you set the backup
time. If the backup time you set exceeds the value listed in the table for the corresponding
power, there exist the following risks:
 The ESM disconnects early.
 The ESM service life is affected.
 The discharge high temperature protection is triggered for the ESM.

Table 5-4 Backup time parameters

Recommended
ESM Backup ESM Discharge Default Discharge
Temperature Power Time Range Time
15–35°C 0.5 kW 0–15 mins 2 mins
1.0 kW 0–7 mins
1.5 kW 0–4 mins
2.0 kW 0–3 mins
2.5 kW 0–2 mins

 Do not modify the backup time during the charging and discharging. Otherwise, the ESM may
disconnect early.
 After the ESM discharge time reaches the preset value, it enters Disconnect mode and reports a
Backup Time End alarm. The remaining ESM backup time is zero, and will be restored to the preset
value after the batteries are fully charged.
 After the ESM backup time is used up, the ESM cannot discharge unless being fully charged again.
If an AC power failure occurs while the batteries are being charged, the ESM may not implement the
backup function.
 After the ESM ends discharging due to backup time used up or discharge protection alarm, the BMS
obtains power from electrochemical cells within 5 mins after the disconnection, records the battery
data, and obtains power from the busbar after 5 mins.

5.1.4 Setting the Pre-Alarm Threshold (∆T)

Users can set the pre-alarm time threshold through 17.2.1.27 AcbGroupSetEndBackupThres
in the SNMP.
Pre-alarm threshold for end backup time, which can be configured by user.
Pre-alarm threshold for end backup time, which can be configured by user.
Value range: 0 to 900, units: s.
The default value is 30, which means the alarm is generated at 30s before the BBU stop
backup.
If the value is 2147483647 (0x7FFFFFFF), it indicates that the value is invalid.

Issue 01 (2018-01-12) Huawei Proprietary and Confidential 34

ETP48600 Embedded Power
User Manual 5 Operation and Maintenance

 Assuming that the preset pre-alarm time is greater than zero and less than or equal to the
backup time, the ESM reports a short backup time alarm when the remaining backup
time is less than or equal to the pre-alarm time.
 When the remaining backup time is zero, the short backup time alarm disappears, and the
backup stop alarm is generated.

5.1.5 SOH Detection and EOL Alarm

SOH Detection
The ESM has SOH detection, which can be enabled by the SOHtest command that is
manually delivered through the SNMP.
After receiving the SOHtest command, the ESM determines the condition for SOH detection.
During the SOH detection, the ESM reports status of Denied Access, Abnormal Exit, and
Normal Stop based on the actual test.
1. Denied Access – Between receiving the SOHtest command and starting the SOH test,
check the following:
− Whether an ESM receives the Forced Sleep command.
− Whether an ESM receives the forced Disconnect command.
− Whether an ESM has hardware protection alarms.
− Whether an ESM has hardware fault alarms.
− Whether an ESM has charge/discharge protection alarms.
− Whether the ESM SNs are in conflict.
− Whether the ESM quantity changes.
− Whether the ESM order is changed.
− Whether all ESMs cannot enter standby mode within 12 hours after the SOHtest
command is delivered.
2. Abnormal Exit – In the SOH test, check the following:
− Whether an ESM receives a Sleep command.
− Whether an ESM receives a Disconnect command.
− Whether non-SOH test ESMs discharge.
− Whether non-SOH test ESMs disconnect.
− Whether an ESM enters Sleep mode.
− Whether the ESM quantity changes.
− Whether an ESM is reseated.
− Whether an ESM has hardware protection alarms.
− Whether an ESM has hardware fault alarms.
− Whether SOH test ESMs have charge/discharge protection (excluding
overdischarge protection).
− Whether the SOH test for an ESM lasts for at least 5 hours.
− Whether the discharge current in the SOH test is less than or equal to 15 A and lasts
for 10s.
3. Normal Stop:
− The SOH test is performed for all ESMs.

Issue 01 (2018-01-12) Huawei Proprietary and Confidential 35

Copyright © Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
ETP48600 Embedded Power
User Manual 5 Operation and Maintenance

 Before the SOH detection, check the power grid and configuration. If the configuration is incorrect
or the N+1 and above backup requirements cannot be met, the backup time may be insufficient or
the system may experience a power failure if a mains outage occurs in the SOH test.
 If the total load power is less than 1 kW, the SOH function cannot be tested.

EOL Alarm
The ESM is able to predict the battery service life based on the delivery date and operating
ambient temperature, and report an EOL alarm upon expiration.
The EOL alarm indicates that the battery SOH is at risk. You are advised to enable the SOH
detection promptly. If the EOL alarm persists, you are advised to replace the ESM. Otherwise,
the ESM backup time may be insufficient.
