FoG Computing

Fog computing is a concept that extends cloud computing by placing resources such as computing, storage, and applications closer to end users. This helps address issues of high latency and network congestion associated with cloud computing alone. Fog computing involves processing data at the edge of the network using devices like routers and gateways rather than sending all data to the cloud. It provides a lower latency alternative to cloud computing for applications requiring real-time interaction. While fog and edge computing are sometimes used interchangeably, fog computing typically refers to processing at the local area network level using a centralized device, whereas edge computing pushes processing directly into smart devices.

Fog computing

Problem
It was estimated in nearly 2016 that there will be 50 billion devices connected to the
internet. Which may create latency over the network. Network latency for the device
which require real time interaction is unbearable. Due to this people started thinking
to have control over the network latency, then the idea of Fog Computing arrives.

Introduction of Fog Computing

Fog computing is the concept that is given by SISCO (on January 2014) which extends
the concept of Cloud Computing but at the edge level. That's why the Fog Computing
also referred as Edge Computing. The simple definition of Fog Computing is the
processing and storing of data between Cloud and End device, which means there is
something in between i.e is Edge Device, which is doing processing of data regardless
of sending it to the Cloud for the processing. This is referring for having some
intelligence, processing and resources at the edge of the network. The edge devices
are near to the physical devices so to having computation over edge level would be
resulting to immediate response and lower the network latency. Which in turn resolves
the issue of data security and data privacy. Fog computing is making use of
decentralized servers in between network core and network edge for data processing
and to serve the immediate requirements of the end systems. Fog Computing reduce
the need of the bandwidth by not sending every bit of information over Cloud channels
Fog Computing also known as Edge Computing, Mist Computing, Fogging or
Cloudlets.

How Fog Computing Works?

t have the
storage and compute service to perform analytics over data and compute the
response. Though Cloud Servers have the power to do these but they are too far
away to process data and timely respond.
In a fog environment, the processing takes place in a data hub on a smart device, or
in a smart router or gateway, thus reducing the amount of data sent to the cloud. It is

fogging allows for short-term analytics at the edge, and the cloud performs resource-
intensive, longer-term analytics .

Fog Computing Versus Cloud Computing.

The most important thing to remember is that Fog Computing complements Cloud
Computing. Fog Computing is not the replacement of Cloud Computing. The existence
of Fog Computing is just because of Cloud Computing. Fog Computing is basically a
way to provide compute and storage services more immediately and close to physical
device therefore there is much difference of response time between Fog and Cloud
Computing. In Fog Computing the response time is not more than Millisecond of sub-
seconds while in Cloud Computing the response time may be in minutes, days or
week.
In Cloud Computing the storage of data remain for years but in Fog Computing the
data is stored for short period of time. There is also the difference of Location, The
Fog remain on Local while the location of Cloud would be global. To summarise, Cloud
Computing requires large amount of bandwidth while the amount of network bandwidth
required in Fog Computing is much reduced.
Fog Computing Versus Edge Computing
Fog Computing and Edge Computing terms often used interchangeably and they both
reflects the same architecture. The main difference between Fog and Edge Computing
is where exactly the intelligence and processing are placed. In the Fog Computing the
processing occurs at the Local Area Network level of the network architecture,
processing data in a Fog Node. Edge Computing pushes intelligence and processing
directly into the smart devices where data is being generated. In Fog Computing there
is single centralized device which is responsible for processing of data from different
end points in the network while in the Edge Computing every node participate in
processing.

Often used term interchangeably

Fog & Edge Computing both refer to having intelligence, processing and storage at
the edge of the network

In Fog computing intelligence down to the local area network level.

Edge Computing places the intelligence of an Edge Gateway directly into the smart
devices.
Fog Computing Issues
There are different issues that occurs while implementing the Fog Computing. Key
challenge to facilitate fog computing is to build the necessary level of interoperability
to support access of Fog Computing resources. The one possible solution given in
the book is to build an Open Architecture of Fog Computing which will not be
dependent on make and type of technology innovation accessing the Fog Computing
environment. An open infrastructure will significantly reduce the cost to develop Fog
Applications, and will provide a common platform on which Fog applications would
be developed.
