SPORTS AWARDS OF MP
To motivate, honor and recognize distinguished players of the state, several awards
are given by the state government. These include

 Eklavya Award (since 1994)—This award is given to the junior players


(under 19 years) in different sports to motivate them to reach new heights of
success. To be eligible, a player has to be a domicile of MP, active in sport for
the past five years, has participated in any state or national event for two

years and has won trophy. Each year, maximum 10 players may be
awarded. Prize includes Cash Rs. 50,000, Certificate, Tie, Blazer and Shield.
 Vikram Award (since 1990)—This award is given to senior players (above
19 years) in different sports. Eligibility criterion is same as Eklavya Awards.
Prize contains Cash Rs 1 lakh, Blazer, Tie, and Shield.
 Viswamitra Award (since 1994)—This award is given to the coaches. To
be eligible, the coach must have trained player who has won at least 2 Gold,
or 4 Silver or 6 Bronze medals in last five years in any national event or who
has won any international medal. Prize includes. Cash Rs. 1 lakh, Blazer, Tie
and Shield.
 Special Award—This award is given to International Medal winner player
by the state government to honor his/her exceptional performance.
 Lifetime Achievement Award—This award is given for distinguished
contribution in development of the sports. Prize includes.Rs 1 lakh cash.
 Prabhash Joshi Award—This award is given for promotion and
development of Malkhamb sport (state sport of MP). First recipient of the
award was Ajay Baktaria for his continuous performance in Malkhamb.

IMPORTANT PLAYERS OF MP
Madhya Pradesh has produced several exceptional sports persons from different
sports. Many eminent sports personalities of the nation owe their origin to the state
of MP. These include—

 Roop Singh: Roop Singh Bais was born in Jabalpur, MP. He was a
legendary hockey player of India. He was part of the Indian Hockey Team
which won gold medals for India at 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games. Roop

Singh was the younger brother of Major Dhyan Chand, the most celebrated
Indian Hockey player. The Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior has been named in
his honor.
 Mushtaq Ali: Syed Mushtaq Ali, the former Indian cricketer, was born in
Indore. In 1936, he had scored a century as a member of Indian Cricket
Team, which was the first century by any Indian in England. Ali was not
only a sporting legend but also a youth icon.
 Chandu Sarwate: Chandrasekhar Trimbak Sarwate, known as Chandu or
Chandra was a celebrated Indian cricketer who hailed from Sagar, Madhya
Pradesh. He was an all-rounder and played nine Test matches for India
between 1946 and 1951. His most memorable innings were for Indians
against Surrey in 1946 of oval, when he and Shute Banerjee scored 249
runs. It is the only time in first-class cricket when the last two batsmen have
both scored centuries. It is the highest partnership in first-class cricket
between number ten and eleven batsmen. Later, Sarwate also served as
national selector and was one of the selectors who chose the Indian team
that won the World Cup in England in 1983.
 Varsha Varman: Varsha Varman is a member of the Indian Shooting Team
and she hails from Bhopal, MP. She won bronze medal at the 2014 Asian
Games at Inchcon in the Women's MPPSCADDA
Double Trap Shooting team event along
with her teammates. Varsha holds several distinctions to her credit. She
created the world record in Double Trap Junior Women event during these
Asian Games. She is the youngest sportsperson from MP to win a medal at
the Asian Games.
 Aditya Joshi: Aditya Joshi from Dhar, MP is a celebrated badminton
player of India. He holds the distinction of being the first male Indian junior
badminton player who was ranked first in the world junior rankings. Joshi
won the junior national championship in 2013 and had won two gold medals
in Indian junior international tournament.
 Sandhya Agarwal: Sandhya Agarwal from Indore, Madhya Pradesh is a
former captain of the Indian women's cricket team. Honored with Arjun
and Vikram Awards.
 Aslam Sher Khan: Aslam Sher Khan, the celebrated hockey player from
Bhopal. was a member of the Indian Hockey Team. Khan was part of the
Indian Hockey team which won the gold medal in 1975 World Cup held at
Kuala Lumpur. Later he emerged as a political leader and served as a
Congress Member of Parliament (from Betul) and a Union Minister as well.
In 1997, Khan joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but resigned from the
party in January 1999. He authored an autobiography, 'To Hell with
Hockey'.
 Shankar Lakshman: Shankar Lakshman was a member of the Indian
hockey team. He was goalkeeper of the Indian team in the 1956, 1960 and
1964 Olympics. He held the distinction of being the first goalkeeper to
become captain of an international hockey team and was awarded the
Arjuna award and the Padmashri by the Government of India. He was

captain of the Indian team which won the gold in the 1966 Asian Games. But
Laxman quit hockey after missing the selection for the 1968 Olympics. He
remained with the Army till retirement. He lived the final years of his life in
poverty and died in 2006 in Mhow.
 Shivendra Singh: Shivendra Singh from Gwalior is the centre forward in
Indian hockey team. In the auction of the first edition of the Hockey India
League, Singh was bought by Punjab Warriors for $27,500.
 Major Dhyanchand: Dhyan Chand is considered as one of the greatest
hockey players of all times. He began playing hockey from Gwalior region.
He was the elder brother of another famous hockey player, Roop Singh: He
was part of the Indian Team that won three Olympic gold medals (1928,
1932, and 1936). The Government of India awarded him with Padma
Bhushan in 1956. His birthday, i.e. 29 August, is celebrated as National
sports day in India.
 CK Nayudu: Cottarikana kaiya Nayudu from Wore, also known as CK', was
the first captain of the Indian cricket team in test matches. He was also the
first Indian cricketer to endorse a brand (Bathgate Liver Tonic) in 1941. The
Government of India awarded him with Padma Bhushan in 1956.
 Madhu Yadav: International player of Indian Women's Hockey (1997 and

 Snigdha Mehta: International player of Table Tennis. Won silver medal in


1997 National Table Tennis.
 Narendra Hirvani: Best known for his test debut in international cricket in
1997, during India vs West Indies match, he became only the second player
in the world to take maximum wickets in a single match.
 Rajeshwari Dholakiya: Internationally acclaimed player of Women's Cricket.
 Rita Jain: Born in Indore, she won Junior Girls Table Tennis Championship
for three years in a row (1972 to 75). She represented India in North Korea
and Japan and was honored by Vikram Award.
 Sushil Doshi: From Indore is a celebrated cricket commentator in Hindi.
 Jalaluddin: Famous hockey player represented India in many international
events.
 Azizuddin: Famous hockey player of Indian team, Azizuddin was honored
with Vikram Award in 1986.
 Sameer Dad: Famous hockey player from Bhopal, he made a goal at Asian
Games in Bangkok and won India the gold medal.
 Chandrakant Pandit: Though he started his cricket career from Mumbai, he
later represented MP as captain of MP Ranji Cricket team.

Hockey
 MP has a national level hockey team 'Bhopal Badshahs'.
 Bhopal is called the nursery of hockey.
 Roop Singh Gold Hockey Cup is organized in Gwalior every year.

 Aishbagh Stadium has hosted International Obedullah Khan Hockey
Tournament.
 Sports Panchayat was organized in Bhopal in 2008. Here it was declared that
training centres will be opened at Mhow and Seoni.
 Hockey Madhya Pradesh (HMP) is the governing and controlling body for
Hockey in the state. Earlier, HMP was known as Madhya Pradesh Hockey
Association (MPHA).
 In 2014, Hockey Madhya Pradesh became 23rd associate member under
wings of Hockey India. Sports and Youth Welfare department of MP Govt.
has also established one State Women Hockey Academy in Gwalior to
promote Hockey and encourage female players to participate in the sport. MP
State Men's Hockey Academy is in Bhopal.
 Only Hockey Hostel in MP is in Narsinghpur.
 MP Hockey player Latif Anwar later became captain of Pakistan Hockey
Team.
 Main Players—Roop Singh (Gwalior), KishanLal and Shankar Laxman both
from Mhow, Aslam Sher Khan, Dau, Uday Bhan, Sameer Dad, Munna Singh
(Teekamgarh), Mukherjee (Jabalpur), Madhu Yadav etc.
CRICKET

 The oldest cricket club in MP was Parsi Club, Indore (1890).
 In 1941, Holkar ruler Yashwant Rao Holkar constituted Holkar Cricket
Association under the chairmanship of CK Naidu, which is now known as
MP Cricket Association, MPCA (HQ-Indore). Major MM Jagdale was its first
secretary.
 MPCA is the main controlling body for cricket in the state. MPCA is an
affiliated unit of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
 MPCA boasts of having two internationally recognized cricket stadiums, the
Holkar Stadium at Indore and Capt. Roopsingh Stadium at Gwalior
respectively.
 In 2008, Sanjay Jagdale MPCA Academy was established by MPCA at Holkar
Stadium, Indore with sub-academies located in Bhopal, Gwalior, Sagar,
Rewa, Hoshangabad and Jabalpur.
 Sanjay Jagdale was a member of the national cricket selection committee.
 Late Madhavrao Scindia had been President of BCCI.
 Jyotiraditya Scindia became chairman of MP Cricket Association in
2014.
 Ranji Trophy tournament first began in 1934. First match was played
between Central India Team vs Australian team (Indore).
 Narendra Hirvani from Indore took maximum wickets (16) against West
Indies (1987-88 test match) in his test debut and equalled world record.
 MP cricketer Mushtaq Ali (Indore) was first Indian cricketer to hold the
distinction of scoring a century by an Indian in England.

 This is the most popular indoor game of MP.
 MP Badminton Association was set up in 1946 at Jabalpur.
 It organizes various cups such as the Gulabrai Chadda Cup, Yash cup,
Rajendra Singh Cup, Radheshyam Agrawal cup, Triple Crown Shield, Master
Arvind, Khagrekar Shield etc.
 Madhya Bharat Badminton Association (1948), Headquarters - Gwalior.

Snooker
 This game owes its origin to Jabalpur.
 It was invented by British Army officers in Officer's mess in Jabalpur during
1874 or 1875.
 The game of Snooker originated as a variation of Billiards.
 Today Snooker is popular in many English-speaking and Commonwealth
countries.
 The premier Snooker tournament is the World Championship is held
annually in Sheffield, England.
 Madhya Pradesh Billiards & Snooker Association is located at Indore and is
actively involved in promoting snooker as well as motivating the budding
players towards this game. Jabalpur also houses Narmada Club (earlier
called Nerbudda Club) which is a famous snooker club located in the heart of
the city.

Athletics MPPSCADDA
• Madhya Pradesh Athletics Association (MPAA), Bhopal has been established
for promoting and developing this sport in the state. It is affiliated to the
Athletics Federation of India.
• Main Athletes-Ankit Sharma, KumariTulodin, Suneeta Pradhan,
Chandrakumari Yadav, Amish Pathan, Mohd. Kasim, Mithilesh Jain.
Karate
• Madhya Pradesh Karate Association (MPKA), Jabalpur was established in
1979 and is affiliated with All India Karate Federation.
• Main Players - Jagriti Patel. Sayeed Khan.Reshma Diwan, Sandhya
Chandrakar.
Wushu
• Wushu, commonly known aa martial arts has emerged as popular sport in
the state of Madhya Pradesh.
• WUSHU Association of M.P. (WAMP). Jabalpur was set up in 2001.

Yoga
• Over the time Yoga has also become popular sport.
• To promote this sport in the region. Madhya Pradesh Yoga Association
(MPYAL Indore was set up in 2006.
• MPYA organizes M.P. State Yoga Championship to promote yoga in the state.
Malkhamb (STATE SPORT OF MP)
• Malkhamb is an ancient sport of India in which players climb a pole or rope and
perform various acrobatic feats.
• As a result many sports techniques have been derived from it. It ensures
exercise of every part of body in minimum time. Malkhamb players are capable

of excelling in any game, particularly wrestling, gymnastics and pole vault. In
view of all these advantages, it has been declared as state sport of MP.
• It is also recognized by the Union Government.
• Malkhamb is present in the Hind Kesari, Indian wrestling championship.
• Types of Malkhamb - Competitively there are three main variations of
malkhamb.
o Pole or fixed (only for men): The pole used in competitions is a straight
pole made of teak or sheesham wood, standing 2.6 metres (8.5 ft) in
height with a circumference of 55 centimetres (22 in) at the base It
gradually tapers to a circumference of 35 centimetres (14 in) at the top.
o Hanging (only for men): In hanging malkhamb, a wooden pole is hung
from chain and hooks, leaving a gap between the ground and the bottom
of the malkhamba.
o Rope/Shape: Mainly for women participants, this is a modern variation
of malkhamb. The participants show several positions or asanas on a
rope.
