Grade 10 Heat Transfer Lesson Plan

This lesson plan covers heat transfer through conduction. The 100 minute lesson will begin with an introduction activity involving a water bath and various materials to introduce conduction. Students will then learn about the factors affecting thermal conductivity and the mechanisms of conduction. Example calculations will be worked through. By the end of the lesson students should be able to describe the mechanism of conduction, solve one-dimensional heat flow problems, and understand the experimental determination of thermal conductivity. The lesson will incorporate discussion, videos, worksheets, examples, and group work to engage students in identifying problems and interpreting data.

Teacher: Mr. A. Benson

Date: April, 2018

Grade: 10

Time: 100 minutes

Topic: Heat Transfer

Lesson Topic: Conduction

REFERENCES (Include page numbers. Avoid using the student's class textbook).
Notes available on the class website CSEC Physics Past Papers

PREREQUISITES
Students should be familiar with the basic conduction and kinetic theory.
Knowledge: -students should know:
The structure of a solid
Examples of good and bad conductors

Skill: - students should know how to:

Manipulate formula to make a quantity the subject

MATERIALS & RESOURCES

For Teacher For each group/student

• White board, markers, laptop, and attendance • Lesson handouts
book.

CONCEPT OR Heat transfer takes place from one object to another when there is a
PRINCIPLE temperature difference between them. Thermal energy can be
transferred from one point to another by either one or more of the
following three methods:
Conduction - a medium is required.
Convection - a medium is required
Radiation - no medium is required. Energy can be transferred in a
vacuum.
OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, student will be able to:

• Describe the mechanism of thermal conduction.
Understanding
Applying
Solve problems in one-dimensional heat flow.
Use the concept of equivalent conductor to solve numerical problems involving composite conductors.
Outline principles involved in the experimental determination of thermal conductivity of good and bad
conductors.
