API RP 8B Drilling Equipment CAT IV Inspections

K2 Specialist Services carried out inspections on various drilling equipment as part of a five-year maintenance schedule for Atwood Oceanics. The inspections found excessive wear on many parts that required replacement. Challenges included elongated pin holes on compensator blocks that required line boring and oversized pins. Bearing cones on dolly rollers were also extremely tight and required a custom jig for removal. K2's approach was to dismantle, deliver, overhaul, and reinstall all drilling equipment within their workshop over a two month period.
