INSPECTION OF THE HP COMPRESSOR STAGE 1

ROTOR PATH LINING

The inspection of the HP Compressor stage 1 rotor path lining

is carried out through the HP1R borescope position.

The isnpection is carried out using a flexible borescope,

covering at least 120 degrees of circumference around the
rotor path annulus. It is not possible to achieve the full 360
degrees, therefore the 120 degrees should be sufficinet to
allow the maintenance engineer make an assessment of the
rotor path condition.

The damage to look for in the rotor path is:

• Discolouration
• Blade rub
• Areas of missing lining.

INSPECTION OF THE LOW PRESSURE (LP) TURBINE BLADES

You can inspect the LP turbine blades through 4 borescope access holes. You can inspect the rear of Stage 4 LP turbine
blades through the rear of the engine using an inspection lamp.

The 4 borescope access holes allow you to view the following areas:-

LP1S - Rear of the IP turbine blades and the front of LP1 turbine blades.
LP2S - Rear of the LP1 turbine blades and the front of LP2 turbine blades.
LP3S - Rear of the LP2 turbine blades and the front of LP3 turbine blades.
LP4S - Rear of he LP3 turbine blades and the front of LP4 turbine blades.

NUMBER OF BLADES:-

Stage 1 - 140
Stage 2 - 84
Stage 3 - 84
Stage 4 - 80

BORESCOPE PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

LP1S - • Remove the two retaining bolts and remove the LP1S borescope access cover plate and gasket.
• Discard the gasket.
• Remove the two retaining bolts and remove the access blanking plug using impact extractor HU 19036/1. Make
sure the 'C' ring seal has been removed with the blanking plug.
• Carry out inspection.
• Clean the mating faces of the blanking plug and the IP turbine case (AMM Task 70-20-01-100-802).
• Make sure the 'C' ring seal is visually satisfactory and installed correctly to the blanking plug.
• Apply with a brush a thin layer of dry film lubricant to the location surface of the plug end and the mating faces of
the blanking plug and IP turbine case.
• Torque the bolts to 40 lbf.in (0,45 m.daN) (AMM Task 70-51-00-910-801).
• Fit the borescope access cover plate with a new gasket and torque tighten the bolts to 40 lbf.in (0,45 m.daN)
