Exponential Functions & Applications

The document discusses exponential functions, equations, and inequalities. It provides examples of evaluating exponential functions, transforming exponential functions, using exponential functions to model compound interest and population growth. It also defines exponential functions as functions of the form f(x)=b^x where b>0 and b≠1. Exponential equations are defined as equations involving exponential expressions, and exponential inequalities are defined as inequalities involving exponential expressions. Examples are given of determining whether a given expression is an exponential function, equation, or inequality.

EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION

x
• b is a function of them f(x)= b or y= b x when b≠0

Evaluate:

f(x)= 3 x APPLICATION

1. f(½) Population growth (Statistics)

2. f(-3) Exponential decay (Biology)
3. f(2) Compound interest (Business Math)
4. f(0.4)

Transformation of Exponential Function

• Let b be a positive number not equal to 1 of an exponential function with base b is a function of the
form.
x−c
g(x)= a ● b +d

where a, c and d are real numbers

Example:

 A population starts with 1000 individuals and triples every 80 yrs.

t
f(t)= 1000 (3) 80

t
f(t)=1000 (3)80
f(t)= 3948.222039
= 3948 individuals

 Suppose that half-life of a certain radioactive substance is 10 days and there are log initially,
determine the amount of substance remaining after 30 days.

1 t
f(t)= 10 ( ) 10

COMPOUND INTEREST
PRINCIPAL

 staring amount of money

P- principal A= P ( 1+r )t

R- interest rate ⬇ ⬇
x
T- time a b
A- total amount

Exponential function for a given situation

 If a principal is P is invested to an annual rate of r compounded annually then the amount after t
years is given by

A= P ( 1+r )t

Example:

 Mrs, Dela cruz invested Php 100,000 in a company that offers 6% interest compounded annually.
How much will this investment be worth at the end of year for the next five years?

A= P ( 1+r )t

P=100,000 A= P ( 1+r )t
r= 6% = 0.06 A= 100,000 ( 1+0.06 )5
t= 5 years A= Php 133,822.56

 Referring to the first example, is it possible for Mrs. Dela Cruz to double her money in 8 years,
10 years and 12 years.

A= P ( 1+r )t A= Php 179,084.77

A= 100,000 A= P ( 1+r )t
( 1+0.06 )8 A= 100,000 A= P ( 1+r )t
A= Php 159,384.81 ( 1+0.06 )10
A= 100,000 A= Php 201,219.65
