Argumentative Essay

The SOGIE bill in the Philippines proposes to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. However, some argue the bill is unnecessary and discriminatory itself. The bill would not allow assigning sex at birth until age 12, and could penalize religious leaders who refuse to perform LGBTQIA++ marriages. It may also criminalize those who voice concerns about the bill or allow transgender individuals into facilities not matching their gender identity. While discrimination should be prevented, critics say a law is not needed and should protect all groups equally rather than appearing to favor one.

SOGIE Bill, needed or not?

The Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression or SOGIE Bill also known
as the Anti-Discrimination Bill that prohibits unfair treatment on the basis of a
person’s sexual orientation , gender identity and expression. Do we need such bill
if there are some acts of discrimination are already covered under present laws?

This SOGIE bill gained many reactions, some agreed that this bill is needed but
some did not. This bill claims that it is anti-discrimination but it is discriminatory
itself for being “one-sided” said Lawyer Lyndon Cana of the Coalition of
Concerned Families of the Philippines because the rights of the straight are being
stepped on. Assigning sex on newborn’s birth certificates is not allowed until they
reach 12 years old and priest and pastors who will refuse to perform marriage
ceremonies of LGBTQIA++ will be stripped from their rights as leaders of their
religious community this two are just some that are under this bill. One of the
penalties for violation upon conviction, by a fine of not less that one hundred
thousand pesos but not more than five hundred thousand pesos or imprisonment of
not less than one year and not more that six years. Let me give you an example
that SOGIE bill is not fair for non-LGBT members, you are in a females restroom
and then suddenly a transwoman entered and you told him that it’s the girls
bathroom and he got offended and called the police or filed a case, therefor we
conclude that those who stand up for facts are criminalized. If they want protection
from people who are being discriminated then pass a law that will protect all
people not only a group - Buendia.

The evidences above show that the SOGIE bill is “one-sided” or it clearly wants
superiority. But we do not hate the LGBT community however we have the
strongest opposition to the bill and we hope that it will not be misunderstood as
hatred towards them.
