INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY
While explaining the need of energy management, the teacher should give students home
assignments based on energy conservation. The students should be made familiar with the
energy efficient devices, various approaches to conserve energy and energy auditing procedure
etc. Best learning will take place if students are given real life problems on energy audit.
This can include energy audit exercise of their homes and school premises and recommended
energy saving options by students

CHAPTER WISE CONTENT SUMMARY OF PROPOSED SYLLABUS
Unit I
i. Introduction – Indian energy scenario, Demand supply gap in energy, energy conservation
and need for energy conservation and ways to meet that need and bridge up the energy
gap. Steps taken by govt. in energy conservation like formation of PCRA , Energy
Conservation Act 2001 and Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
ii. Bureau of energy Efficiency and its schemes- About role of BEE and its various schemes like
Agricultural DSM, Municipal DSM, ECBC, star rating of appliances. Summary of various
national level awareness and other programmes in energy conservation.
iii. Energy Rating , consumption and energy efficient devices- basics of power and energy
consumption of various day to day use electrical appliances. A brief of energy efficient
appliances that can replace existing in efficient ones.
iv. Energy Efficiency and its significance – various ways to achieve energy efficiency in
buildings, households and day to day lifestyle, its advantages in national , global and
financial perspective.
Unit 2-Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Energy Audit
i. Building Envelope, Control and Comfort systems and Lighting- basic description of building
envelope like walls, roof insulation, Energy performance Index (EPI),lighting systems and their
types,HVACsystem. Applications and Ways of increasing efficiency and reducing losses of
mentioned system. Characteristics of Light, Types of Lighting, Incandescent Lighting, Fluorescent
Lighting, Vapor Lighting, Street Lighting, LED Lighting, Lighting Design, Light Dimming, Products
for Energy Conservation in lighting system.
ii. Definition, objective and methodology of Energy Audit – what is energy audit and its
significance. Types and Stages in an energy audit with step by stem methodology and examples
regarding the same.
iii. Instruments for Audit - basic role and usage guidelines for instruments like digital multimeter,
tong tester, lux meter, power analyzer , flow meters, thermal imager, temperature indicators,
digital pressure meter etc
iv. Case studies and Building surveys- case studies and review of before and after effects of energy
audits in audited industries,stage wise energy audit exercise in own college buildings, homes
and nearby buildings.
v. ECBC and Tips for Energy Conservation- overview of Energy conservation Building codes and its
applications in various buildings. Tips for energy conservation in various utilities, buildings and
day to day activities.
Unit 3-Renewable Energy and its use
i. Introduction – what is renewable energy and its advantages
ii. Types of Renewable Energy Sources- brief description about renewable sources like wind, solar,
small hydro, biomass, geo thermal, tidal etc.
iii. Electric vehicles- basic introduction to electrical vehicles, govt policies, charging stations
Unit 4-Cost Benefit Analysis
i. Evaluation of savings by EC options- basic idea of pricing of energy efficient equipments,
expenses in taking audit measures, monthly and annual energy savings via changing energy
consumption after implementing energy conservation options
ii. Simple Payback Period and analysis- problems on investment and savings after EC options and
calculation of payback period.
iii. Energy Service Companies (ESCOs)- role of ECSOs and review of existing methodology , working
models and options under ESCO modes.
