Drug awareness and its harmful effects

What is drugs?

Drug is a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise
introduced into the body.

What is illegal and prohibited drugs?

Illegal drugs are drugs which a person is not allowed to own or use. The law says a person cannot own
an controlled drug without permission.

Prohibited drug’ is then defined as meaning a narcotic substance or any drug specified in a legislative
instrument.

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9165

AN ACT

INSTITUTING THE COMPREHENSIVE DANGEROUS

DRUGS ACT OF 2002, REPEALING REPUBLIC ACT NO.

6425, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE DANGEROUS DRUGS

ACT OF 1972, AS AMENDED, PROVIDING FUNDS

THEREFOR, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

Signs and symptoms of use of club drugs can include:

 Hallucinations.
 Paranoia.
 Dilated pupils.
 Chills and sweating.
 Involuntary shaking (tremors)
 Behaviour changes.
 Muscle cramping and teeth clenching.
Muscle relaxation, poor coordination or problems moving.
Effects of drug abuse to :

Physical Health, Drug abuse can adversely affect every major system in the human body. Teens
who abuse drugs may engage in behaviour that places them at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS or
other sexually transmitted diseases. This may happen because they are injecting drugs and
sharing used needles, or because of poor judgment and impulse control while experiencing the
effects of mood-altering drugs, making them more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviours.

Psychological, Mental health problems such as depression, developmental lags, apathy,


withdrawal, and other psychosocial dysfunctions frequently are linked to substance abuse among
adolescents. Substance-abusing youth are at higher risk than nonusers for mental health
problems, including depression; conduct problems, personality disorders, suicidal thoughts,
attempted suicide, and suicide. Marijuana use, which is prevalent among youth, has been shown
to interfere with short-term memory, learning, and psychomotor skills.

Emotional, People turn to drugs for various reasons-they might like the relaxing feeling or use
them to forget troubles in their lives. Drug abuse can affect the user emotionally through
psychological independence and can worsen preexisting conditions. Drug can also affect
emotionally the people close to the user.

School/academics, Teens who abuse drugs have lower grades, a higher rate of absence from
school and other activities, and an increased potential for dropping out of school. Although we
all know or hear stories about people who use drugs and still get great grades, this is not typical.
Most people who use drugs regularly don’t consistently do well in school.

10 ways of preventing drug addiction

 good self control.


 make sure you are sorrounded by good friends.
 school anti-drug policies.
 positive relationships.
 find a healthy way to cope with stress.
 maintain a lifestyle that makes you happy.
 find the support you need.
 avoid peer pressures.
 distract yourself from taking drugs.
 spend more time with your family.
