LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to;

a. relate parts of the poem into real life situations;


b. express own opinions about the poem;
c. perform the group activities while utilizing the lines understood from the poem.

II. Subject Matter


Topic: A Martian Sends a Postcard Home by Craig Raine (1979)
References: Book – Celebrating Diversity through World Literature, pages: 411 – 414
Materials: Visual aids, Images manila paper, marker

III. Procedures

A. Preparation

Everybody stand up and let us pray.

Anyone who wants to lead the prayer? Class prays

Good morning class!

Okay, I want you to pick up those pieces of


papers under your chairs and arrange your
chairs properly.

Are you through? Students respond

Before we start, let’s make first an


agreement.

What will you do if your teacher is in front


talking? Students respond.

Listen carefully is our first rule.

If you want to answer what will you do? Students respond.

Raise your right hand is our second rule.


Okay then, you may now take your seat

Class, are there any absentees today? Students respond.

B. Motivation

Okay, I have here some things, and I want


you to describe them as detailed as possible.” Answers may vary
(shows bottle opener) “What’s this?

How do you use a bottle opener? Answers may vary

What’s the use of the key? Answers may vary

How did you managed to identify all these


things? How were you able to describe them Answers may vary
with ease

That’s right! You’re already familiar with


these things, that’s why you were able to
describe them easily. But, if you don’t know
about these things in the first place, do you

“Imagine if you’re an alien, and you visited


Earth. It’s your first time seeing all these Answers may vary
humans and these things. Would you have
described them the same way as you did a
while ago?”

“That’s right! That’s exactly the dilemma of


the character in the poem that we’re going to
read today.

C. Presentation

But before we proceed in reading the poem,


let us first read our objectives.

D. Unlocking of difficult words

But before we actually discuss the poem,


there might be some words in the poem that
you may find unfamiliar. I have here some
sentences with the unfamiliar words
underlined Please read the first one.

1. Hilda borrowed a caxton from the library.

-A caxton is a book printed by William


Caxton, the first man to print books in
English

2. Harold shrieked with pain when his finger


toes hit the edge of the wall.

-A shriek is a loud, sharp, high-pitched cry


people make, commonly when in sudden
pain, or when scared.

3. The experts are still trying to figure out the


meaning of the engravings in the wall.

-Engravings are designs formed on a hard


surface, such as wood, metal or stone.

4. Juan tried to work with the apparatus for


his project.

-An apparatus is any instrument, machinery,


tool, material, that has a particular function
or intended for a specific use.

5. The mother tried to soothe the crying baby


with her lullaby.

E. Reading Proper

Now let’s proceed to the poem. This poem is


entitled ‘A Martian Sends a Postcard Home’
and is written by Craig Raine. Raine is well
known as one of the exponents of ‘Martian’
poetry. Through unusual, ingenious and
sometimes humorous visual images, Raine
attempts to make readers look at the familiar
in fresh, illuminating ways. Move to your
respective groups and I’ll assign you all parts
of the poem to read aloud.

Let’s figure out what things are the speaker


describing in the poem. Again, what is a
caxton?”

G. Application

Okay then, let us now proceed with our


second activity for this morning/afternoon.

In this activity, you will be grouped into


three.

Each group will be graded using the


following rubrics.

(Teacher explains the rubrics)

Each group will be given a task that will be


presented in front. Every group will only be
given 10 minutes to finish their tasks, so
better make good use of your time.

Am I clear class?

Now, I need one representative from each


group to come here in front and choose a
random task for their groups.

Group1
1) Choose a stanza in the poem, draw out its
meaning and use the meaning as lyrics for the
song you will sing here in front.

Group2
2) chose a stanza from the poem and show its
relation into real life situations through a role
play.
Group3
3) create a jingle using the meanings any
stanza of your choice that you can get from
the poem.

H. Generalization
